It has been well established that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is helpful in preventing many diseases including cancer.
What has also been feverishly investigated is the effects of berries on the body. Some researchers have studied the health benefit of specific berries while others have focused on isolating the health-promoting bioactive compounds that give berries their claim to fame.
Some of the known cancer-preventive agents present in berries include vitamins A, C, and E and folic acid; calcium and selenium; beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and lutein; phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol; triterpene esters; and phenolic molecules such as anthocyanins, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, ellagitannins, and phenolic acids. Berries contain high levels of a diverse range of phytochemicals, most of which are phenolic molecules.
If you’re not familiar with the majority of these compounds then don’t worry. They are all more or less different types of antioxidants. That berries exhibit potent antioxidative properties is widely accepted, but their biological properties extend beyond antioxidation.
In fact, berries also exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, are able to inhibit cell proliferation, modulate cell cycle arrest, and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells with little or no negative effects in normal cells.
These traits make berries an awesome addition to any health-minded diet.
For example, a 2006 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry extracts inhibit the growth of human oral, breast, colon, and prostate cancer cells.
In 2006, the journal Nutrition and Cancer published a 6-month cancer-preventive pilot study that was conducted by administering 32g or 45g (female and male, respectively) of freeze dried black raspberry powder (BRB) to patients with Barrett’s esophagus (BE), a pre-cancerous esophageal condition.
BE’s importance lies in the fact that it confers a 30-40-fold increased risk for the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma, a rapidly increasing and extremely deadly form of cancer. At the time of the publication, interim findings from 10 patients with BE supported the finding that daily consumption of BRB promoted reductions in two markers of oxidative stress.
So it goes without saying that berries are a blessing. As a rule of thumb, any food (or berry) that has a deep colourful hue will most likely be a high source of antioxidants. The key is to incorporate a wide variety of different colours in order to benefit from all their respective antioxidant properties.
Add berries to your smoothies, to your morning cereal and salads, or enjoy them on their own. Here’s a berry-licious recipe to get your taste buds started:
Berry Fusion Breakfast
½ cup each of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries
¼ cup goji berries, soaked (optional)
4 tbsp shredded dried coconut
1 cup rice or nut milk of choice
•combine berries in a bowl, sprinkle coconut overtop, and top with milk.

How to watch your weight on night shift?
Can anyone give me suggestions on how to watch my weight and even lose a few pounds while working the night shift. All of the "plans" that I have seen have recommendations for day shift. I am actually both depending on the day. I work 3-4 days a week and I am off for the remainder.
Thanks for you advice-

I used to work nightshift and I ballooned. My recommendation is after work *I know its hard* go the gym. Also, prepare your meals at home and take them to work. If desired, run some lime juice along the rim of the glass and dip into a dish of salt or sweetener. Mix all ingredients together. Pour over 1 cup of crushed ice. Optional: Garnish with lime slice. Enjoy. Serves 1!Here are some general alcoholic drinks guidelines:
Downing too many cocktails is a fast way to pack on a few pounds. But if you want to have a drink or two on special occasions, there are definitely drinks that are fairly good choices, and ones you should be avoiding at all costs. For starters, a light beer or a glass of wine each has about 100 calories. But that's not necessarily better than a mixed drink -- if you know what to mix your drinks with. A shot of vodka or rum (or most other alcohols) has about 75-100 calories. So if you mix your liquor with something calorie-free, you can keep your cocktail calorie count to about 100, which isn't bad at all. Just don't trick yourself into thinking juices are great mixers. They aren't. They'll likely add 50-75 calories to whatever you're sipping. Calorie-free sodas like Diet Coke, Diet 7Up or diet orange are great mixers. Also, calorie-free soft drinks, like sugar free lemonade or Crystal Light are awesome to use in mixed drinks (check out some of HG's cool cocktail recipes). On the other hand, the things you want to avoid at all costs are frozen drinks like daquiris, pina coladas, and margaritas. And, of course, you'll want to steer clear of any of those sweet drinks mixed with cream or milk -- like Long Island Iced Teas (which contain something like SEVEN shots of liquor...YIKES!). Good luck, and remember, if you're drinking anything at all, make sure someone else is driving!

I would try this workout. At the same time you will be gaining muscule and burning fat. So its awesome.WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Two 5 pounds weights.
* means one 5 pound weight in each hand.If you don't have two 5 pound weights try using water bottles full of water.

20 squats x3
*20 side arm lifts x3
20 crunches x3
20 push-ups x3
*20 lunges x3

QUESTION:
did i eat good for someone trying to watch their weight?
oatmeal with raisins & cinnamon.
an orange, & an apple.
a soft pretzel w/ cheese.
2 bowls of honey bunches of oat cereal/grape nuts cereal too.
1 thing of non fat yogurt
& 3 oatmeal raisin cookies.was this all bad for you? especially when trying to watch you're weight? will i gain weight from this?
-
ANSWER:
oatmeal with raisins & cinnamon.-Good!
an orange, & an apple.-Good!
a soft pretzel w/ cheese.-Good (as long as cheese was lowfat; pretzels really aren't great b/c they are a simple carb; try something whole wheat)
2 bowls of honey bunches of oat cereal/grape nuts cereal too. (watch out here-cereal tends to sneak up on you; while it's good in moderation, the calories tend to add up and people underestimate the amount of cereal consumed)
1 thing of non fat yogurt (good source of calcium & protein)
& 3 oatmeal raisin cookies (good to satisfy your sweet tooth in moderation; maybe try to eat just one or two)Each of these foods individually is good...however, your diet seems to be lacking in two very important things-a source of protein (like lean chicken breast or fish) and vegetables (these really help one feel full)
Excellent choice w/ the oatmeal-that's definitely the best way to start out the day (definitely keep this carb); I don't know what your activity level is, but you probably don't need this many carbs unless you are a serious athlete.
The best weight loss tip I can give you is to cut out as many processed foods as possible and replace them with lots of fruits, veggies, and whole grains (like oatmeal!)
Good luck!

QUESTION:
So I was told in order to lose weight I need to watch my sugar intake?
I thought it was the calorie intake I needed to watch? Trying to eat better and lose weight.-
ANSWER:
If you're not eating green you're not getting lean. Simply put, diet is not just a matter of reducing one thing or another. You need a balance in your diet. And you need proper physical activity. If you are lethargic (sit around a lot) you will get larger and larger.

Is an overweight person who tries to watch their weight healthier than a thin smoker?
Or a thin drinker who drinks instead of eating or even a person who takes illegal drugs and is thin? If an overweight person is trying to watch their diet and does not smoke or drink or take drugs, would you say they are healthier? What say the smoker is more athletic and does physically hard work?-

We are not doctors, and none of us have made diagnostic examinations of any of the "types" people in question. Your question is unanswerable. Some smokers live long healthy lives, some non-smokers die tragic horrible deaths at early ages. QUESTION:
How to watch my weight?

-
QUESTION:
How comes when I dont watch my weight I loose weight?
If I diet for like 3 weeks, and eat the healthiest!! not one person says I lost weight or look thin..
but when I go though a few weeks of really binge eating, on candy, chips, pizza and all fast foods and I just eat and drink what I want and go over my calories and everything for a few weeks everyone says wowww your losing weightt!!!its sooo weird, how when im dieting no one says so, but when im eating junk everyone says so =
why is this?
-
ANSWER:
What is your "diet" calories, and what is your "binging" calories? (guess).
If you don't eat enough, your body holds on to it's fat because it senses it's starving, and it doesn't know where the next meal is coming from - so none of your calories can be given up to weight loss.
This usually happen if you eat under about 1300-1500 calories, and thats NOT working out. Working out, you should have more like 1900 to lose weight (according to my nutritionist anyways), so if you are eating under 1500 on your "healthy" days, you won't lose weight, but if you were eating something more like 2000 on your binge days, your body would sense a constant flow of incoming calories, so it doesn't need to store any since it has a constant supply and gives them up quickly.
Might want to look at increasing your calories on a normal day (though it would be better to do it with healthier foods that are high in calories). Good luck!

I am 28 yrs old, 5'2" and I weigh 155 lbs! I have gained so much weight in the past month and can't understand why! Any advice? Only serious answers please.-
ANSWER:
It can be a number of things. You may be eating things with a high sodium levels wich is causeing you t retain water. Or it may be glandular... You may have a Thyroid disorder, in which cases I highley recommend getting tested for it because there are meds to keep it under control. ALso, (f you're female.. sorry I don't know) You may have someting called Polycystic ovarian cysts that causes radid weight gain and should also be checked out.... if you're female that is... but if it's none of those... then I recommend trying to eat organic foods!... Try shopping at Whole foods and eating organic and you'll see a world of difference in how you look and feel.... most people only look at fat or caloric contents, but they don't think about all the other junk and pesticides are in the processed foods.... Well anyways.. the best of luck to you!

QUESTION:
Which is more important to watch when trying to lose weight?
Calories or carbohydrates?
I ask this because a food can have more calories, but less carbs, and vice versa....So which is more important to watch when trying to lose weight?-
ANSWER:
It is about both- you want to consume less calories but you want high quality calories. For carbohydrates you need complex starches- whole grains, brown rice and whole wheat flours etc. You want to have fiber also which is carbohydrate but helps in the digestive process, vegetables also have carbohydrates as do fruit- both of which are needed in any healthy diet. Think of it as reducing sugars and simple carbohydrates that will not be used and eating instead small healthy portions of complex carbohydrates supplemented with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

QUESTION:
How can I put on weight on my wrists for a watch?
I find it very difficult to put on weight, even though I stuff myself a hell of a lot.The point is, my wrists are tiny. I'm a 16 year old male and my wrist is smaller than most girls I know. I'm fine with my overall body weight, but I like wearing watches and it just looks ridiculous
Is there anything I can do?
-
ANSWER:
Wrist mostly have connective tissue, not muscle tissue. You aren't going to be able to add much mass to them. To further the bad news, the watch industry tends to make most 'mid-size' models look like womens watches. One brand I like is TX Technoluxury. The band comes in very flush with the case giving the band a more wrap around look on your wrist.
Bulova tends to have smaller cases as well.
Festina tends to be larger but case/band combos like the road warriors still look good.
Swiss army also tends to have smaller cases.
Look for small cases, with flush narrow bands. Also look for two-tone bracelets or leather/strap with visible stitching to accentuate the vertical direction.

QUESTION:
When losing weight, what is the best thing to watch? Calories, Carbs, Saturated and Unsaturated Fat?
I'm trying to be healthy, and I've been counting calories since I don't even know when, and I haven't seen much of a result. What is the best and healthiest thing to watch when trying to lose weight effectively?-
ANSWER:
Eat a balanced diet of healthy fresh foods.
Careful of labels for example cooking spray is labeled 0 calories but that is not really true
they are allowed to call any serving under 9 calories a serving 0 calories and a serving is 1/3 a second spray. Mostly made of fat and propellants like propane.Eat real foods; lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, they are easier to count calories and are healthier than industrial foods. Avoid the center aisles of the grocery store.
Exercise daily mix it up, walking or jogging one day strength resistance training another, swimming don't let exercise become routine and boring.
Cutting calories alone is very difficult exercise has to be part of the equation and healthy balanced diet to fuel the exercisingSome helpful links

QUESTION:
Potatoes? Are they really bad for someone trying to watch her weight?
Isn't it true that potatoe chips are the culprits but boiled potatoes are okay?-
ANSWER:
If you are following a low-carb diet, potatoes are one of the foods restricted because of their high glycemic index -- because of their high carbohydrate content. However, if you're simply watching calories they're very low calorie -- only 70 calories per 100 grams. They're actually good for you as they contain many proteins, minerals (particularly potassium, calcium), and vitamins, including vitamin C. Plus, the skin on the potato is includes tons of extra good dietary fiber.
Enjoy them baked, roasted or boiled but avoid fried, as the oils they're cooked in are usually made of bad unsaturated fats and they'll turn into a high-calorie meal!

ANSWER:
I avoid eating the food, unless on a scheduled break.
It is very tempting... I snacked too much today because we had to throw out a fair bit of food. I used to be more tempted... because if its getting thrown in the bin, I may as well eat it, right? But now I'm kind of sick of our food.
If you keep eating a lot of it now, you'll probably be over it in a few months.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.

QUESTION:
Is it true you have to watch what you eat after you quit smoking or you will Gain alot of weight?
I recently quit smoking and I read something that said
if you don't watch you eat after you quit smoking you
will gain ALOT of weight..Is this True?
-
ANSWER:
DUDE! I quit smoking on Monday of last week and quit nicotine in general four days ago. (I dipped and then used commit for a few days) This is my conclusion to that whole mystery. I can taste so much more flavor in food than I could a week ago. Everyday food taste better, maybe because I'm eating something different everyday but it's absolutely mind-boggling delicious. It's because food tastes better, I work out when I get stressed out or want a cigarette not eat. I have lost weight because I'm satisfied with what I'm eating instead of relying on instant gratification since I looked forward to buzzes since the first thing I did in the morning was get a buzz.Don't let your mind play games with you, take a firm stance and tell your mind what's going to happen.

QUESTION:
Can you just workout and lose weight or do you also need to watch what you eat very closly?
and lose weight or do you also need to watch what you eat very closely? I would really like to get into shape.-
ANSWER:
To lose weight you have to watch your FIT (Frequency, Intensity and Time).Frequency: Basically you should work out 3-5 days a week. However, if you want to lose weight you probably should go with 5 days a week (at most 6) because you need to have at least one day for your body to rest.
Intensity: You should stay within your target heart rate (THR) during your workout. To find your THR you subtract your age from 220 and then multiply that answer by .70 and also by .85 to find your THR. For example:
Let's say you are 20 years old.
You would do 220 - 20 = 200
200 * .70 = 140
200 * .85 = 170So your THR would be 140-170 if you were 20 years old
Time: 20 to 60 Minutes; however the first 20 minutes of your workout, your body is basically cleaning itself so if you're trying to burn fat you have to work out for more than 20 minutes
As far as watching what you eat, you should probably try to eat as healthy as possible but don't stress too much about it. Just pay attention to what you are eating and if it helps to keep a log, then go for it... do whatever helps you best
Good luck!

QUESTION:
What do you have to watch when loosing weight?
fat, calories......etc...? What do i have to eat less and what more of?-
ANSWER:
There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below. The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.
Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.
For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.
Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.
There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you exercise them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.
If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.
