BMI stands for body mass index and is a special mathematical formula based upon your weight in pounds divided by your height in inches squared and then the result multiplie 00004000 d by the number 705.
This may sound all so confusing so I have illustrated an example for you here. Imagine a woman whose weight is 180 pounds and is of the height of 5 feet 10 inches. She would have a BMI of 26 and would be considered on the over weight side of the index.
Lets take the height of the woman which is 70 inches and then square it and the result is 4900. We then take her weight in pounds 180 divided by 4900 and we get 0.036 which is then multiplied by 705 to give us 25.89 or 26 rounded. This is how we have come to get her BMI at 26.
The following is an easy to follow table which will assist you in determining your BMI. If the BMI of an adult is below 18.5 then he or she is considered under weight. Between 18.5 to 25 is normal. Above 25 to 29.5 is over weight. Individuals must take special care if they BMI fall between 25 and 34.5. They are prone to serious health risks.
Over-weight men with BMI over 25 and waist lines over 40cm must be very careful. Women have to be below 34cm. If the results are over these figures then diabetes, hypertension and heart disease are huge risk factors to these individuals. As a general rule if your BMI is over 30 then you are obese and must look at ways to bring the figure below the safety level to avoid falling victim to diabetes, etc.

QUESTION:
What is the difference between weight management and indoor cat cat food?
I want to know because indoor cat cat food is cheaper but the weight management is what I am looking for... what is the difference?-
ANSWER:
The name. Stop believing that they make such a thing as indoor cat food. There is proper or improper food for the species and that mis it, You also need to know that the price you pay at the store does not include vet bills
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?
http://www.catinfo.org/#Learn_How_To_Rea…
http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/petfooddefinitions.htmlDry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s, constipation, and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockages
from dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)
An even bigger problem is that it IS dry and it dehydrates no matter how much your cat drinks
Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food. Cats are not naturally big drinkers.
95% of the moisture is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Think about it.
Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
http://www.catinfo.org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_Just_Fine_on_Dry_Food
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.
THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS
Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck in between.

QUESTION:
A different way to look at weight management?
People think that if they gain weight either it's genetic or they need to eat less. I've seen studies that say Americans are so sedate that they can get obese without overeating. Why not consume a healthy number of calories - say 1500 per day - and then exercise more if you gain weight? I know it's a different approach to weight management but wouldn't this be the healthier way to go?-

Won't work. Figure out how to lay on couch, watch tv, and lose weight and you'll have something.

QUESTION:
Should I feed my dog weight management or senior food?
My dog is around 11 years old and he's a basset mix, so he's already on the heavy side. But since he's gotten older he's become even less active and he's gaining weight. I'm unsure whether to feed him a weight management food or senior food (since it will give him the things an older dog needs). Help?-
ANSWER:
The ultimate judge of if a food needs switching, is the dog in front of you. If your dog is otherwise healthy (might be time for some senior wellness testing at the vet...), with no liver or kidney issues, and isn't overweight, then my feeling is, why bother. The food is working for him. What often happens in older dogs, is they don't have as high an activity level as they did when younger, and the owners will continue to feed them the same amount as they did before. The dog gets fat as a result, which can lead to a whole host of problems.
Also, some older dogs will develop kidney problems, which can be aggravated by a high protein food regardless of energy level etc.
I'm currently in the process of switching my nearly 14 year old lab on to a senior food. I have a feeling his old GI tract just can't handle the maintenance diet any more, I'm hoping the senior food will be a bit easier on him. I kept him on the maintenance diet until now, as there was no particular reason to switch and he was doing well on the other food.

QUESTION:
Weight Management Clinics, are they a waste of money?
I'm planning on starting at a weight management clinic next friday and well i'd like to know if they are a waste of money. I know they give you appetite suppresant and nutrition consulting and a bunch of other stuff but it does come at a nice chunk of money per week and...well i only want to lose 10 pounds and for the past 8 months i have not gained or lost any weight so...If anyone has had a good or bad experience with weight management clinics, please let me know. Thanks
-
ANSWER:
If you are only ten pounds overweight, you have no need for a weight management clinic. You should be able to manage yourself through this. Weight management clinics are designed for the severely overweight, so save your money and do it yourself.Appetite suppressants are all around you, and you can find your own without turning to a clinic for help. Water is the best one. You can fool your brain into thinking you're full by drinking lots of water. Carrots and celery are great too. They will fill you up with lots of fiber, not calories.
As far as nutritional counseling is concerned, there are all kinds of websites you can turn to, beginning with the food pyramid devised by the USDA. See below. If you are unsure which sites are reliable, turn to academic sites first, as they aren't trying to sell you anything. The first thing to do is eliminate the empty calories in fried fast foods, candy, cakes, donuts, potato chips and soda.
Try to move a little faster, a little longer too. Take the stairs when possible and eschew the elevators. Running, cross-country skiing, swimming, aerobic dancing are all terrific for losing weight. For a very quick way to lose weight, try rope skipping. Click on the second link below for a great rope skipping workout demonstrated by fitness expert Lyen Wong.
All my best to you. You can do it yourself. One final piece of advice: Visualize yourself as lean and fit, and your body will follow suit.

QUESTION:
Is it acceptable to mix Evolve Senior dog food with Evolve Weight Management food?
My mother has a 9 year old Golden Retriever and it is kinda overweight since she moved into a condo with no yard for the dog to run and play anymore. She feeds Evolve Senior and loves it, but would like to mix in Evolve Weight Management. I know that you should never mix different brands of food but not sure the rules of "same brand" mixing. PAWS, I have read your answers, if you are out there I need your help!! Thanks-
ANSWER:
Who told you that? People have all sorts of weird ideas of what diets are best for dogs, some quite fanatical. Dogs like humans will put on weight if they don't get enough exercise or are desexed or getting on in years, they will become over weight as their food intake (including titbits and treats) is beyond what they need to remain healthy, and goldens are food lovers, and will steal food if they can. I had one so know! Just don't over do the food. Cut the dried food down by the recommended dose too, add some raw meat or tinned fish with the oil and cooked veg to make a filler. Like a level cup of good dried food, your mum can mix it with some raw meat or fish and cooked veg, Poor a little hot water over it etc. No more than two and half cups, and give her the occasional raw bone to chew on, because the weight reduced stuff is generally lower in fat. That is all. Just check the packet nourishment analysis and see. You can mix it up. But to me that is a waste of time, just keep to the Weight Management
food, Cut by half the recommended dose and add meat/fish and veg to it.

QUESTION:
Which one of the following weight management plans is the most effective?
A. One that causes a person to lose a lot of weight in a short time period
B. One that can be followed over the course of a lifetime
C. One that includes convenience foods that require little prep time
D. One that requires specialty foods, such as canned drinks-
ANSWER:
This depends on what your goal is. I would say A and B are the two best on that list depending on your goal. C and D can be incorporated into A and B. A can be useful if you wanna lose weight for a specific reason/event. For example, the summer is coming up and you wanna hit the beach, etc. B is the best if you want to take care of your overall health for your whole life. Keeping a healthy weight, immune system, blood pressure, etc.

QUESTION:
What meal bars are the best for weight management?
I want to control my eating habits at work during lunch (and save the a day) by buying meal replacement bars to carry in my purse with fruit to drink with water when I'm too busy to make my own lunch or lazy to eat healthy. Which ones should I get? I like Clif and Balance bars, but are there other suggestions?-
ANSWER:
My only suggestion is to buy "think thin" bars. I have only ever found them at krogers grocery store so if you don't live next to one I guess your out of luck.Having said that I have spent hours combing through these different bars to actually find a healthy one. While you would think all these health/energy bars would be healthy many are as bad as a candy bar. Some requirements I suggest looking for when trying to find a bar is one look at the sugars. Personally I won't eat any that have more than 3g of sugar, but anything over 10g I recommend staying away from. Also another key feature to look for is make sure the protein is at least 15g optimal would be 20+g. This will first help get you enough protein each day, and keep carbs low. Last thing to look for is the ingredients, the longer the list the worse the bar is. Also look out for key words like hydrogenated oil. If it has this word don't eat it. Also make sure the first ingredient has the word whey in it. If the first ingredient is something like sugar, water, cocoa, etc don't eat it the first should always be the protein.
Again the best I have found is
Think thin
Balance bars - okay, but I have stopped eating them.
Supreme bars - taste good & a popular choice.

QUESTION:
Bridal weight loss and weight management?
You would think having my dress in teh closet would keep me on track but no, I"ve gained weight since I bought it. and it fit so perfectly I did not need alterations. Well 235 days to go!
What are your weight loss and managements tips and plans for your wedding?-
ANSWER:
Easy1) Measure your food.....all prepackaged food tells you what a serving is, and all calorie charts do the same....if it says a serving is 1/2 cup (level, not heaping) then That is what it is.
2) keep a food diary--write down every thing you eat and how much & when...reviewing it you can determine how you are sabotaging yourself.
3) Brisk walking...the overall health benefits are great...do 20 minutes every day for 6 days a week at a good clip (strolling doesn;t count) it'll retard the munchy urge, aid digestion & overall circulaton, you will tone from it...and you'll sleep better
4) Sleep at least 7-8 hours every night...research tells us that lack of enough sleep can result in weight gain!
5) drink a big glass of water just before your meal and eat slowly so your stomach can register that you are full when you are really full...the mouth can chew & swallow faster than the stomach can say 'Full' which is why people tend to over eat then end up very, very uncomfortable.
6) Up your fiber....go easy at first...fiber will fill you faster than over-processed foods and your colon will love you for it...for example switch from white rice to brown...leave the skins on potatoes...even the mashed ones. Lotsa dark leafy green veggies and steam 'em-saves the nutrients and doesn't add calories...retains the yummy taste, too. Avoid over-processed and empty calorie foods too.
7) An apple a day may not keep the Dr. away but it's a healthy snack and will curb the ol afternoon snack-attack!
Stay away from diet soda...empty calories and evidence is in that the artifical sugar causes an abnormal sweet craving which can sabotage the dieting....
Good luck.Good luck.

QUESTION:
What is that weight-management product Kim Kardashian endorses?
Does it work? What is it? What do you all have to do besides taking it? How does it work?-
ANSWER:
On the commercials it will usually say diet pills work with diet and exercise. Want to know why? Because they don't work at all. If you diet, exercise, take diet pills and you start to lose weight it is the diet and exercise doing it. Diet pills do nothing. They are a scam that many people fall for, costing them a fortune. The right diet and exercise is ALL you need.

QUESTION:
Why is strength training and important component of weight management?-
ANSWER:
In weight management it is essential to eat moderate amounts of protein and low carbs at each meal and that should be 3 meals and 2 snacks in between .The protein keeps the body in a fat burning mode instead of burning carbs and it also helps the weight training to build more muscle. Muscles burn fat for energy and it follows that the body then loses fat and becomes leaner. The exercise should be consistent and not intermittent

QUESTION:
whats the point for the fiber choice tablets? for weight management?
like it says on the container for weight management
and fiber keeps you full, so when you take 2 tablets, is the point of the fiber tablets to keep you full? and provide you with fiber obviouslyanyone with past experience have this?
-
ANSWER:
Yes, it's supposed to help you feel full and keep your bowels moving. Fiber also helps somewhat in blood sugar control.I chew half a tablet when I get that empty stomach growl between meals, and it does stop me from snacking (at least more so than just a diet soda alone did). I've been doing it for about six months now and I've lost about ten pounds (not much, but then I'm not doing it to loose weight, although that's been a nice benefit).
If you're prone to low sugar between means, you need to eat food. I have to check my levels in the afternoons before I decide between an muffin or a fiber tablet.
Don't take too many fiber tablets in a day, as the effects can be unpleasant. And generally don't take fiber tablets with your medications, either.

QUESTION:
is it healthy to take fiberchoice weight management pills just to prevent cravings?
it has fiber wich i dont think i need, but i need to help myself from the eatinng-
ANSWER:
Pills don't work. Some people feel full by eating whole wheats, while others feel full by eating protein rich food. Figure out which one you are, and eat more of those foods.
Of course, if you're hungry just because you're hungry, then you shouldn't be trying to stop that.
Your body needs a certain amount of fuel (food) each day to stay alive and do any exercise/activities that you're involved in. If you eat slightly less than this amount then your body will burn fat to make up the difference. If you eat way less than this amount, you'll go into starvation mode and won't lose anything.
Figure out how many calories you need to eat each day to lose weight, how many extra calories you burn through exercise, and how many calories are in the foods you eat. You can do all of that here:

I have a 14 yr. old dog with not too many teeth left & she loves your weight management chicken & rice canned food. But it is so wet I have to scrape away some of the juices that jell in the can. I buy about 30 cans a month. She eats a can a day. She can't eat dry food anymore because of so few teeth. I would love to see this canned food just a little dryer so it does not cling to what few teeth she has left. Thank You Patricia Nava-
ANSWER:
I'm not sure this is a question, but I have a new puppy and didn't want her eating just canned food, so I would take the dry dog food and put it in a coffee grinder (or blender) till it was a fine powder, i would then add to the canned dog food until it was the consistency I wanted. I bet this would help you out.

Does the Skinnygirl Daily Weight Management & Energy diet pill work?
I came across this diet pill and I am interested in it. I want to know if anyone else has tried it and if it does any justice before I go ahead using. Or are there any other diet pills that you could suggest? Look forward to some answers!-
ANSWER:
There is no sound medical proof that any of them work. The only one with FDA approval is Alli and you need a BMI over 28to buy it, or risk counterfeit Alli buying online (FDA warning).
You still have to diet and exercise as well.

QUESTION:
What strategies should be taken to begin a weight-management plan?-
ANSWER:
First I would figure out realistically how far your willing to go to reach your goal weight. The biggest thing I can suggest is to stop eating/drinking anything too unhealthy (fast food, soda, beer, pizza, fried food etc.) just cutting how unhealthy food with help you loose weight and feel great. Next, instead of killing yourself in a gym just take it easy. Whenever I always want to lose weight I take power walks through the park or try a yoga class. Also drinking lots of water can clean out your system and help lose a few pounds as well. So I would create a plan and a realistic diet chart. Then try your plan for about a week. If you are already cheating after a week, you probably need to try something else and look for someone to help you reach your goal.

Have you tried weight management programs?
Does it cost too much money? Also, does insurance pay enough to make it affordable?-
ANSWER:
The weight management programs offered though the local hospital(s) tend to be more affordable than most and some health insurance companies will, at least, partially pay for the program as long as it's accredited by a reputable (non-profit/government) organization. If wanting to consult with a registered dietician (RD), too, this site should have a listing of those in your area in addition to healthful eating tips: http://www.eatright.org

QUESTION:
Would you feed Senior or Weight Management?
we have a 14 year old golden. she's had weight problems for a while but right now she only needs to lose a little, and she's so old it's not as important, as long as she doesn't gain. she has hip problems/arthritis. we have the option of feeding her either a senior diet, or a special diet for weight. which would you chose? does it really matter at this age? i won't say the name of the food to avoid arguing over which food to feed, but it's one we chose and it's a good one.-
ANSWER:
I have an 11 year old Golden who is getting pretty old also. She is also kind of overweight. My vet told us to feed her Senior 7+ dog food. Maybe you could just feed a little less? That's just what our vet said; you should ask your vet to meet your dog's specific needs, even though our dogs sound really similar :]

QUESTION:
What is a good diet food or weight management food for dogs?-
ANSWER:
The best diets for weight management and weight loss are special Veterinary diets. These diets have far fewer calories than most "weight management" foods you'll find OTC. I'll link to an example below and to a Veterinary weight loss program you can find on the web.
One problem with so called "weight management" foods in the grocery store or the pet store is that many of them are not that low in calories. You can help your dog lose weight with these but you have to be very cognizant of the amount you feed. I wrote an article on this subject that I'll attach below for more detail.
Fit and Trim is one product available in the pet and grocery store that is fairly low in calories. It has about 1500 calories per pound. The Veterinary Diet I recommend has fewer than 1200 calories per pound by comparison. The EVO diet referenced in other answers has over 1700 calories per pound and illustrates the point I make about so called weight control diets and how many calories they actually have.

QUESTION:
Herbalife is claiming excellent results for weight management. Can anyone confirm if its true?
Herbalife opened its office in Malaysia in January 2006. They claim to be doing extremely well in sales via MLM. Apparently the product is giving excellent results to reduce weight. Is this true? Any good and bad stories?-
ANSWER:
Not everything works the same for everybody, you can try but remember they have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee so pay close attention and do not loose your money. They are expensive unless you actually want to become a distributor. But I cannot make any recommendations for anything else in Malaysia because what I use is not there yet.

QUESTION:
What is a healthy fast meal that tastes good ( ideal for working out & weight management).?
** Also, no mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, or artichokes.
Thanks
-
ANSWER:
picky picky. I like a pear with cottage cheese. With that, a salad made of mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes and artichokes.
Here are some other options of my favorite lunches -
for beverage - skim milk, a lot of water, diet dr pepper
Tomato soup with popcorn is a good choice.
Whole wheat bread peanut butter banana sammich.
A chicken wrap with low fat dressing.
tuna salad and on whole grain bread.
I know a local place where I can get roasted chicken, just pulled off the bones. I can't get enough of that. No sauce for me, but I'll have baked beans, but they usually have too much junk on them.
I have to watch my carbs - they're not evil, just too much for my system. I have to eat them at the right times, and in the right amount. Carbs should be in their most whole from - fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain, and fresh dairy.
