Healthy Eating Tips

WOMEN over 40 generally find it harder to lose weight and stay in shape. Hormonal changes, plus poor eating habits, accentuate the problems of slower metabolism, thicker waistlines and creeping weight gain.

Though hormonal changes are inevitable for women over 40, there are healthy eating tips which women over 40 could follow to lose weight and stay in shape.

Here are five healthy eating tips for women over 40:

Healthy Eating Tip 1 - Do Not Skip Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is needed to rev up the body's metabolism (after a night of fast) so it can start burning calories at the next meal. Skip breakfast - and the body's metabolism slows down throughout the day; thus, burning less calories and making it harder to lose weight and stay in shape.

No matter how busy you are preparing in breakfast for the kids or family, do not skip breakfast. Grab a fruit if you are in a hurry.

Healthy Eating Tip 2 - Cut Down On Sodas And Sugary Drinks

Families eating out often end up in fast-food joints because of the children's clamoring for fries and soda.

Soda drinking is bad for women over 40 who want to lose weight and stay in shape because of its very high sugar content (there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in one ounce of soda!) Soda does not contain any fiber or nutrients; causes rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin, resulting in subsequent lows in blood sugar. Hunger returns and guess what, more soda and more sugary foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Healthy eating in pregnancy - any tips or tasty recipies!?
I'm currently pregnant and need diet inspiration! In particularly I am struggling to incorporate sufficient roughage into my diet. Do any of you have healthy eating tips or recipes to share?

    For example
A tip of mine is - because I cannot stomach cereal on a morning I have been trying to have a bowl of branflakes or all-bran in the evening so I still get the fibre.
A recipe would be spinach and cheese on a crepe/pancake.

    All ideas appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
Anything you want to eat- you can get all your vitamins and fibre in tablet form these days.
It is best to do it through diet- so maybe high fibre brown/grain breads used in sandwiches with salad and meat. Fish is good but expensive. Bananas are full of goodness so maybe a smoothie- Banana, milk, ice/ice cream, vanilla ess and honey. Have lots of salad not the boring types either. Try a mediterranian salad with seared chicken breast or an asian spicy beef salad. Stir frys with hokien or rice noodles include lots of mushrooms and asian greens.
Pregnancy and eating are a match made in heaven- enjoy.

  2. QUESTION:
what are some healthy eating tips?
What are some tips for healthier eating and maybe a few exercise tips? I have a sweet tooth but don't drink very much pop/soda. I don't get a lot of exercise even though I have a membership to the local YMCA. So I guess there's a good start huh? Go there more, check. Lol. Any other ideas are welcome thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Eat a 40-30-30 diet like I do. Well, TRY to do, lol. It's high in protein and lower in carbs. Here is the book I use:

      http://www.amazon.com/Formula-Personalized-40-30-30-Fat-Burning-Nutrition/dp/0345443063/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262406941&sr=1-2

Eat plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein (like chicken and fish). Also be sure to include healthy fats like nuts and olive oil. Hey, I lost 30 pounds before Christmas! Good luck!

  3. QUESTION:
Can someone give me healthy eating tips?
Alright...so, I've been trying to find like some sort of schedule of healthy things to eat. Like...a list of what to eat for breakfast and lunch and supper. I want to change my lifestyle and start eating healthy meals. Can anyone give me some healthy recipes? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Try this site, it has lots of healthy recipes.

  4. QUESTION:
What are some healthy eating tips?
I don't want to lose weight, I just want to be healthy. I'm not asking for tips on weight loss. And j can't cut out too many carbs for a reason that would take too long to explain. Help?

    • ANSWER:
      1. exercise for 30 minutes every day.
try jogging or running on the tredmill or join a sport like baseball or soccer.

      2. stop eating/drinking anything with refined sugars or that is processed.
sugers turn into fat. Sugars actually turn into fat quicker than other foods

      3. drink 64 oz. of water every day (this might be hard, but that is the amount u should aim to get every day)
When a person is thirsty, the brain sends messages to your throat and stomach. Even though the throat might be trying to tell you that u r thirsty, the signals in the stomach are more noticeable. The stomach makes you feel hungry when you are actually thirsty sometimes. So, when u r hungry, u might be thirsty, so try drinking water first

      4. watch your calories
aim to only eat about 2500 calories a day. One pound of fat is made up of 3500 calories. If you eat less than 2500 calories a day and only eat about 2000 calories a day. If you do this, you will lose about a pound a week

To be more specific, you can...

      1. First start by getting up earlier than usual. Around 5:30 AM to do some of you workouts. Getting up early shocks your metabolism because the body needs

more energy to get going. Right? This will start your system on the road to weight loss. That early start with about 10 minutes of stretching. Have a cup of

coffee to get the blood going also.

      2. Do all the sit-ups you can. Just do them. 15 or 20 whatever, we don't have a lot of time to work with. Rest 1 minute repeat, do this for 6 sets. Already

you are breathing hard and feel worn, because the body is working extra hard at being up earlier and then going right into exercise. If the early morning

hour lets you get your cardio in, go ahead and do it. 30 minutes.

      3. Diet. Cut all current meal portions in half, just cut them in half, nothing fancy or complicated, CUT IN HALF! Cut out all bread products, all gravies,

candies, chips, night snacks, etc. If you crave at night eat a banana, other fruit or best a non-fat yogurt. There are some tasty ones out there.

      4. In the evening do another 6 sets of sit-ups maxing out each set. Cardio again. The trick is to stay with getting up earlier. Yes it’s hard, that’s why

it is so effective. Why do you think the Army gets up so early, it is intense training to the max.

  5. QUESTION:
Healthy eating tips for muscle gain?
I was just wondering if anyone has some tips or even sites/ideas on healthy foods that will also help building muscle I don't lift everyday I lift every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday as a part of my lifting schedule for track. I don't eat exceedingly unhealthy foods but I also don't always eat things that I should I just need some help on things to eat and how much to eat for adequate amounts of muscle mass. Oh I'm also 15 and weigh about 135 pounds.

    • ANSWER:
Drink a GALLON of WHOLE milk a day. Eat plenty of eggs, lean ground beef (or other red meat), tuna, almonds, walnuts, whole-wheat pasta, multigrain bread, beans of all sorts, and plenty of raw vegetables and fruits to balance it out. You should be eating a meal every 2-3 hours and consuming between 2000-4000 calories a day. Also make sure you are getting no less then 6 hours of sleep a night.

Get a workout that looks like this, and make sure you start with a fairly heavy weight 75-100 lbs and make sure to rest at least 2 minutes between working sets (not warm up sets):
      Workout A:
      Squats 3 sets of 5
Bench press 3 sets of 5
Dead lift 1 sets of 5

      Workout B:
      Squats 3 sets of 5
Shoulder press 3 sets of 5
Power Cleans 5 sets of 3

Alternate every other day (EX: Monday – workout A, Wednesday - workout B, Friday - workout A. Next Week: Monday - workout B, Wednesday – workout A, Friday – workout A. Etc.) Add 5 lbs everyday (10 lbs to dead lifts).

You should warm up for each lift like this:
2 sets of 5 with just the bar
1 set of 5 with 25% of the weight
1 set of 3 with 50% of the weight
1 set of 2 with 75% of the weight

You can add dips to the workout if you also want prettier arms.

If you want more details about this workout you can find everything you want to know by looking up Mark Rippetoe and feel free to email me with any questions or comments.

  7. QUESTION:
What are some tips for healthy eating and gradual weight loss?
As of tomorow i want to start eating really healthily and avoid snacking on bad things like crisps and chocolate. Id also like to loose a few pounds.Do you have any tips on eating healthy?

    • ANSWER:
Try calorie shifting, the idea behind the diet is to instead of avoiding food, embrace it and use it to your benefit to improve your metabolism. This way you'll actually continue to burn fat even once you stop the diet.

The major problem with all diets that limit your calorie intake is that they as a result weaken and lower the effect of your metabolism on the foods you eat and actually make your body much more prone to storing calories as a result. Much like when an animal goes into hibernation, your body will go into scarcity mode and begin holding onto anything it can.

That's the main reason that people experience rebound effects from diets. Calorie shifting actually does it right because it changes the way your body utilizes food and as a result you lose weight and keep it off when you stop.

I'll throw in a link to a popular calorie shifting diet program in my source box for you to learn more about it.

  8. QUESTION:
Eating tips for healthy weight loss?
I'm trying to lose some weight the healthy way; by eating right and exercising more. I'm just looking for some tips on ways to eat healthy foods. For example; eating a piece of fruit for breakfast, or substituting certain foods for others. I'll take anything. I'm not being obsessive about it, but I'm just looking for some simple things I can do to lose some weight.

    Thanks for your help!

    • ANSWER:
If you want something simple, you just follow these rules:
      1. Eat lots and lots of vegetables and fruits
      2. Eat less carbs, cholesterol, fat and oily meals.
      3. Exercise regularly

  9. QUESTION:
What are some tips for eating fast food in a healthy way?
I work full time and go to graduate school full time and find myself eating on the go. I don't have a lot of time to exercise, but I do make time to go for walks to relax and get outside once in a while. As a result, I feel myself not having the same figure I did even a year ago. I'm not overweight, I just don't always feel so good eating bad things all the time, and I feel my clothes tightening a bit. Any tips on how to eat on the go but still eating healthy? Any tips on how to do simple things to exercise too? Like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.

    • ANSWER:
For breakfast, instead of doughnuts or bread/pastry/danish and coffee, try eating an apple. It is very healthy and works better than coffee in waking you up.

For brunch or lunch, add a banana to your normal diet. Again, it is healthy and easy to carry. It should replenish you as the day goes on.

Try eating dinner early. It is better to eat dinner early than late. Your body will appreciate it.

If you can, try drinking anti-oxidant drinks once in a while. Naked Juice is a good one. This will cleanse your body of the bad stuff that junk food brings.

As for keeping the weight off, Yes, do take the stairs. If you take the stairs regularly, you will burn a lot of calories. As you do it more often, you will learn that you have more energy than before.

Also, keep going on those walks. It'll help you gather your thoughts and keep you sane throughout the school year.

      GOOD LUCK!

  11. QUESTION:
Share some exercise and healthy eating tips?
I want to know if you could reccomend a exercise or healthy eating plan that works. I am 18 soon so i wanna look after myself and pick up good habits.

I am a hungus hole aka love to eat and a bit of a sweet tooth.

    Can you recommend anything please?ta
and..i wanna get rid of the fat on my thighs

    • ANSWER:
Its never too soon to start taking care of yourself, and thanks for asking, for the exercise recommendations the best thin I can tell you is that you need to incorporate cardio, strength and stretching into a workout plan that you will actually follow. To burn fat you should be doing at least 20 mins of cardio, anything less and you wont be burning much fat. I like to do 30 minutes of cardio either running or biking, and then stretches that target all the major muscle groups. try this at least 4 days a week, an hour a day is not too much to ask for your health. Strength training is also good because muscle mass burns energy while fat mass does not, basically if you build up muscle mass you will burn more calories even when you arent exercising.

  12. QUESTION:
What healthy eating tips do you swear by other than the obvious ones like drink plenty of water?

    • ANSWER:
It's not hard, eat a balanced diet...less fat, less sugar, more fruit and veg and exercise more, anyone who tells you anything else is either trying to sell you something or hasn't done enough research. Anyone who tells you to drink 6 or 8 or whatever glasses of water a day or calls ANYTHING a "superfood" is in the same bracket. You do need water, obviously but it can come from any number of sources including food.

  13. QUESTION:
Could somebody give me some healthy eating tips? Thanks?
Could anybody give me some tips on eating healthy?...it would be really helpful

    • ANSWER:
Instead of eating chips and dip I really like bell peppers (green, yellow, or red) cut up and dipped in hummus. For when you are craving something sweet buy those yoplait yogurts in all their great desert flavors. For when you crave salty or crunchy buy microwave popcorn (the unbuttered or low fat kind).

  14. QUESTION:
Any tips for healthy eating on a budget?
I am a 23 year old college student and I am looking for some good tips/recipes/ideas for healthy eating on a budget. I love fresh fruits and vegetables... and pretty much anything diet related/healthy.... that's not the problem. My problem is that I can't afford to pay the ridiculously high prices for healthy food! Does anyone have any ideas?
I like the ideas so far but one thing I should definaely qualify is that I live in maine... so this time of year the farmer's market is not an option... sadly.

    • ANSWER:
I feel your pain! Organic is crazy expensive and fresh fruits and veggies alone are very expensive here in Milwaukee. I have tried to shop local and unfortunately it is usually more pricey than pick n save. Try to join the savers clubs at your local grocery stores, these cards allow you to get the sale prices. I personally look in the ads every week and buy my fresh fruits and veggies at the grocery stores in my area depending on the sales. Then I buy my whole grain pastas and cereals at wal mart, they have excellent prices. Aldi also has great prices but be careful because their meat is iffy and the veggies can go bad quickly. Good luck sweety I know it is a pain but very worth it in the long run.

PS prices vary depending on where you live. I live in an area where farmers markets are NOT cheaper, I shopped local for years and cannot afford it any longer.

What are your best tips for healthy eating?
    I've been eating healthier lately and I'm not a diet, I'm actually changing my lifestyle. I'm not fat i just want a flat stomach. Any tips would be helpful, thanks! :}

    • ANSWER:
Well not just eating healthy but exercising to, situps and crunches will shrink your stop and do some cardio. Do situps and crunches like i would say about 50 sets of each maybe like 3 times in a week and do stationary bike or running 4 or 5 times a week. I weighed 250 in august now i weight 178 because i exercised 4-5 times a week i at 3 meals a day and i counted cals. He was my trick for 6 days of the week stay of away from fast food and soda and for 1 day during the week say like a friday pick that day as your fat day meaning eat anything you want just don't overdue like have that as your reward for eating better healthier. Add more juices instead of soda, drink lots of water. Again only eat fast food and soda once a week as your fat day. Cut out the snacks you eat but pick healther snacks and eat smaller if you need a snack at night like pretzels, popcorn light on butter, something like that. Buy some small little cups of fruit or real fruit or yogurt and use that as snacks trust me once you get in a routine for about a month it will be easier. Personally i did not notice myself losing weight till like the 3 or 4 month. Its takes dedication and motivation without you have nothing also use an ipod with your favorite types of music that helps me get going to workout 4-5 times a week goodluck!

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like your diet is pretty decent now. Easy thing to do, is clean your diet up. Switch from white flour based foods ( the pasta you like ) to maybe whole grain or some stores sell a soy based noodle for easy proteins of vegans. Cut sugars out and looks like your doing fine now.

  20. QUESTION:
so far I've gone one week without eating any type of meat. Any healthy eating tips?
I want to lose at least 20 pounds

    • ANSWER:
If you want to stay healthy, eat what your body wants you to eat. For example, if you're craving chicken, eat it, but only small amounts.
Eat Atleast one fruit everyday. DO NOT starve yourself. I eat like a pig and I'm still really skinny. But I do exercise.
If you want to lose weight, you'll have to do some kind of workout. If you're a girl, I recommend stretching a lot and getting really flexible. Stretching helped me get stronger and it also toned my body. Do some dance routines or anything physical that you like.
If you're a guy, well, can't really say much. Most guys like to play sports so you should go for it!
Drink water. More than you usually do. Make sure it's WARM water. It will help you lose weight and help you get immune to being sick.
So basically that's all I got about being healthy.
The main point is, to eat what your body wants you to eat. But not too much.
      Have fun!

Does anyone have any tips for eating healthy?
Hi, I eat fastfood alot. But I'm sick of it and wanna quit. I saw SuperSize me it helped me change my mind. So,today and now on I wanna eat healthy. So does anyone have any tips or advice?

    • ANSWER:
There's a lot of differ ant things you can do. I was in the same boat at you. The best advice I can give you is to see a nutritionist. She worked MIRACLES for me and really helped me to understand more. They give details on what to eat and how much. The most important thing I learned was everything is ok in moderation. She never said to quit eating what I was eating...just limit it. Smaller portions. I really recommend seeing one. They aren't too expensive either.

  25. QUESTION:
Do you have any strange or interesting tips for healthy eating?
I take a small G&T with a lemon slice in the evening (that's not really the healthy bit!), leave the glass in the kitchen with the lemon in it, and in the morning top it up with hot water - so refreshing and wakening the taste-buds! Only started doing this so don't know what the health benefits are, but I have heard that hot water and lemon first thing in the morning is good for dieting, and this way I don't have to spend time slicing lemons before work (and there is negligible alcohol left in the glass!) What do you think of that one, and have you any other strange tips?

    • ANSWER:
First, I eat healthy…fruits and veggies…lean meats or skinless rotisserie chicken, no fried food or fast food (I can eat a half dozen of french fries once or twice a month or more if I make them myself with good oil and less salt)…I watch my calories intake and make sure I never get hungry by eating lots of whole wheat stuff and fiber….blah, blah, blah,…
I do about 8,000 calories of exercising every month so I can eat normally and not get fat.

Then, I can eat anything I want, anything…as long as I pay for it…
I do not pay with money but I pay with effort. Each time I bicycle one mile on my stationary bicycle, which takes about 5 minutes, then I spend 32 calories exercising.
      Let’s assume I want some chocolate…I love chocolate…
I can have a Lindt Lindor Truffle, Swiss White Chocolate with a smooth filling…yes, I can.
I can have as many as I want…as long as I pay for it.
A serving size is 7 pieces (39g) and 250 calories but I do not need a serving…I just want one piece or two (they’re a little less than one inch square and a little less than ½ inch thick but very fulfilling, taking a long time to melt in your mouth.) so each of them is about 35 calories which is about one miles/5 minutes on that stationary bicycle.
So I just eat a piece or two and put the bill on my stationary bicycle so next time I do my low cardio, I will have to add one or two mile because of the chocolate I ate.

So I can eat anything I want, anything I crave…nothing if off limit…as long as I can pay for it.,,32 calories at a time.

They us a book with recipes, one of them I have every morning it is made with 1 banana, 1 cup of milk, and 2oz of peanut butter (sometimes I use a little extra pb) and some ice (if you want it cold), put these all in a blender and drink! its really good! especially for a healthy diet where you are trying to avoid bread which is probably a common goal for most healthy diets. It is also quite filling! Good luck and hope you like it!

    • ANSWER:
Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. How much you should eat depends on your calorie needs. Use the Food Guide Pyramid and the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels as handy references.

Enjoy plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Surveys show most Americans don't eat enough of these foods. Do you eat 6-11 servings from the bread, rice, cereal and pasta group, 3 of which should be whole grains? Do you eat 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables? If you don't enjoy some of these at first, give them another chance. Look through cookbooks for tasty ways to prepare unfamiliar foods.

Maintain a healthy weight. The weight that's right for you depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Excess body fat increases your chances for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer and other illnesses. But being too thin can increase your risk for osteoporosis, menstrual irregularities and other health problems. If you're constantly losing and regaining weight, a registered dietitian can help you develop sensible eating habits for successful weight management. Regular exercise is also important to maintaining a healthy weight.

Eat moderate portions. If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. Did you know the recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing cards? A medium piece of fruit is 1 serving and a cup of pasta equals 2 servings. A pint of ice cream contains 4 servings. Refer to the Food Guide Pyramid for information on recommended serving sizes.

Eat regular meals. Skipping meals can lead to out-of-control hunger, often resulting in overeating. When you're very hungry, it's also tempting to forget about good nutrition. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but don't eat so much that your snack becomes an entire meal.

Reduce, don't eliminate certain foods. Most people eat for pleasure as well as nutrition. If your favorite foods are high in fat, salt or sugar, the key is moderating how much of these foods you eat and how often you eat them.
Identify major sources of these ingredients in your diet and make changes, if necessary. Adults who eat high-fat meats or whole-milk dairy products at every meal are probably eating too much fat. Use the Nutrition Facts panel on the food label to help balance your choices.

Choosing skim or low-fat dairy products and lean cuts of meat such as flank steak and beef round can reduce fat intake significantly.

If you love fried chicken, however, you don't have to give it up. Just eat it less often. When dining out, share it with a friend, ask for a take-home bag or a smaller portion.

Balance your food choices over time. Not every food has to be "perfect." When eating a food high in fat, salt or sugar, select other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.

Know your diet pitfalls. To improve your eating habits, you first have to know what's wrong with them. Write down everything you eat for three days. Then check your list according to the rest of these tips. Do you add a lot of butter, creamy sauces or salad dressings? Rather than eliminating these foods, just cut back your portions. Are you getting enough fruits and vegetables? If not, you may be missing out on vital nutrients.

Make changes gradually. Just as there are no "superfoods" or easy answers to a healthy diet, don't expect to totally revamp your eating habits overnight. Changing too much, too fast can get in the way of success. Begin to remedy excesses or deficiencies with modest changes that can add up to positive, lifelong eating habits. For instance, if you don't like the taste of skim milk, try low-fat. Eventually you may find you like skim, too.

Remember, foods are not good or bad. Select foods based on your total eating patterns, not whether any individual food is "good" or "bad." Don't feel guilty if you love foods such as apple pie, potato chips, candy bars or ice cream. Eat them in moderation, and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health

Try this salad. It is very tasty, filling and nutritous.
Takes some effort, but well worth it.
You need a bunch of raw spinach.
      A fresh garlic bulb.
      Half an orange.
      A handful of unsalted walnuts.
A few strips of bacon (if you really are that concerned about your health, leave this out, or substitute it for raw parma ham. but bacon tastes SO good!)

      For the dressing:
      5 ml of olive oil
10 - 15 ml. of balsamic vinegar (according to taste; I love it so I use more)
A dash of freshly ground black pepper
A sprinkling of dried peppermint leaves (or spearmint, or both!)
A generous sprinkling of roasted sesame seeds.

Wash and cut the spinach into bite-sized pieces. Grill the bacon and let any grease drain off.
Peel your garlic bulb and slice up the cloves into small slices. Pop them on some foil and grill them on low heat, turning as soon as one side becomes golden brown. (Note* I use a whole bulb because I am not very careful - some slices inevitably get burned. If any go black, discard them!)
Put the spinach leaves and stems into salad dish, add the grilled garlic, cut the bacon into strips, cut the half-orange into segments (you can leave the peel on.) Toss in a handful of walnuts. Add all.
      It's ready!
Sometimes I add half an avocado to it (diced.) That's for extra vitamin E, although you get some from the olive oil and the sesame seeds ... but it might not be enough.

I know bacon is supposed to be a no-no these days, but I love it and it really sets off this salad. This small amount won't harm you!

I always try to balance the vitamins in my food so that there is a wide range of them, and minerals too. It becomes very easy after a while; often just mixing colours works out - green and red and yellow and red ... (for veggies and fruit).
If you follow all the advice the other people have already sent you, about what to cut out and to include at least 5 different vegetables and fruit a day, you will be on your way.
A very good reference book is "The Food Doctor" (Healing foods for mind and body) by Vicki Edgson and Ian Marber, published by Collins and Brown. ISBN 1-85585-682-4. www.thefooddoctor.com
However, be warned, their recipes are a bit off measurement wise and time wise. Otherwise excellent for knowing just what your food contains and what it does for you. Very concise and clear, and they have sections for healthy eating according to various didorders and diseases too.
      Enjoy!

  30. QUESTION:
What are some good tips for healthy eating on the go?
I want as many new ideas as possible on how to eat healthy everyday - and on the go sometimes, too.

I already know about the obvious ones - carrots, celery, raisings, cut apples - but I don't want to eat the same things every day.

    All ideas are welcome.
For example - mung bean sprouts can be sprouted at home with little effort and they are a very complete form of nutrition - any other ideas???

    • ANSWER:
Here are some of my tips and tricks...

Nuts are easy-to-carry protein. (unsalted - of course)

I like to mix very low cal puffed cereals into my yogurt in the morning. Simple but yummy.

A can of pinto or black beans - kept at work (I'm a vegetarian - but you need not be) can be a lifesaver. Pour them on top of some lettuce with a little bit of salsa - and you've got a mexican salad.

Skinny Cow fudge ice cream bars are sooooooooo good. Low cal - low fat - and still yummy.

      Whole grain - light bread.

Wheat pasta (you get used to it)

Don't buy those hundred calorie snack bags. Make up your own. Have you tried Pirate's Booty or the low fat cheez-its?

You can buy a plastic steamer that works for veggies in the microwave. Great when you don't want to eat raw veggies.

The "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" Spray is a lifesaver. When I need to add some zest to steamed veggies - it always does the trick!

Pickles. Adding one next to your sandwich makes you feel less deprived when you really want some chips!!

      Good luck!!!

  31. QUESTION:
Any tips on healthy eating so I can lose weight a little faster?
I want to lose some pounds and I'm going to start eating healthy like apples, grapes, banana, cherry, etc. and exercise .

    • ANSWER:
Not bad enough they bombard our email inboxes with that acai berry crap, now they're spamming us here?

      Anyway ...

You're not a monkey, so while apples, grapes, etc., aren't unhealthy (you should eat at least 3 servings of fruit a day), you need a good solid diet, mostly vegetables, some meat, maybe 3 ounces a day (or rice and beans if you want to stay away from meat - but you need two essential amino acids that you can't get from any other food [liquid garbage in a can isn't food, it's profit - for the manufacturer]).

You also need to increase the amount you burn, but not by vigorous exercise. Doing that makes your metabolism change gear while you exercise, making more of less food (becoming more efficient), so you don't really burn much more during that 30 minute workout than you would have without the workout.

Walk, don't ride. Park a block away from where you're going, or at the far end of the parking lot. Take the stairs, not the elevator. Walk to your friend's house, don't call. In short, do what human beings have been doing for the 8 million or so years that we've been human beings. We weigh too much (I'm not excluding myself) because food's too easy to get, we eat the wrong kinds (we never developed a tolerance for simple carbs) and we're lazy. Eat well and use your body and you won't have a weight problem unless you have a medical problem.

I BELIEVED THAT NO TWO PEOPLE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH
WERE ALIKE; NO TWO PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME FINGERPRINTS, LIP PRINTS, OR VOICE PRINTS. NO TWO BLADES OF GRASS OR SNOWFLAKES ARE ALIKE. BECAUSE I FELT THAT ALL PEOPLE WERE DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER, I DID NOT THINK IT WAS LOGICAL THAT THEY SHOULD EAT THE SAME FOODS. IT BECAME CLEAR TO ME THAT SINCE EACH PERSON WAS HOUSED IN A SPECIAL BODY WITH DIFFERENT STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES AND NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS, THE ONLY WAY TO MAINTAIN HEALTH OR CURE ILLNESS WAS TO ACCOMMODATE TO THAT PARTICULAR PATIENT'S SPECIFIC NEEDS.
      James D'Adamo

The dynamics of weight loss are related to the changes your body makes when you follow your genetically tailored diet. There are two factors.
      1) First, as your body makes the dramatic shift of eliminating foods that are poorly digested or toxic, the first thing it does is try flush out the toxins that are already there.
Those toxins are mainly deposited in the fat tissue, so the process of eliminating toxins also means eliminating fat.
      2) The second factor is the effects that specific foods have on the bodily systems that control weight. Depending on your blood type, the lectin activity of certain foods may do the following:
__ Interfere with the digestive process.
__ Slow down the rate of food metabolism, so you don't efficiently burn calories
      for energy.
__ Compromise the production of insulin.
__ Upset the hormonal balance, causing water retention (oedema), thyroid
      disorders and other problems.

Our blood contains aeons of genetic memory--bits and pieces of specific programming, passed on from our ancestors in codes we are still attempting to comprehend. One such code rests within our blood type. Perhaps it is the most important code we can decipher in our attempt to unravel the mysteries of blood and its vital role in
      our existence.

__ When you use the individualized characteristics of your blood type as a guide for eating and living you will be healthier, you will easily reach your ideal weight and you will slow the process of ageing.

__ Your blood type is a more reliable measure of your identity than race, culture or geography. It is a genetic blueprint for who you are, a guide to how you can live most fully.

  34. QUESTION:
healthier eating tips for a fast food lover?
I was wondering if you all have any tips that would make eating healthier easier. I really do want to start eating healthier but I love fast food and whenever I try a diet with health foods, I get grouchy and unhappy and it actually makes me crave junk food more. And when it comes to just being committed no matter how bad it is, that's not me, I'm very bad with commitment. So Is there a way for me to eat healthy and be satisfied with it?

    • ANSWER:
make a list of any food you think is healthy, like salad, fish n chips, etc.

i choose fish over seafood (more cholesterol) and chicken or beef ( cholesterol n more oil and many chemicals)

i choose real chicken over nuggets (you dont know wat they made nuggets from)

i order stir fry n always say *less oil, no MSG, more veggies*
      --> my fav word

then you might start to modify it, like cut salad dressing n change the chips with baked potato which have less oil.

include more simple veggies in your foodlike salad, tomato slices , baked bean etc.

fast food arent all bad, try veggie tortilla.

make promise to yourself, like if you eat fastfood 4 times a week,
now u will eat regular fastfood for 2 times and eat healthy modified fastfood for the rest of 2 times of the week.

im not a big fan of fast food so i cant really make a full list for you, but sometimes i hv no choice but to eat fast food n i modified it (i choose the kind of fast mood and add more veggies n replace the oily one w the substitute if any)

      gud luck!

Tips on healthy eating and exercise during pregnancy?
    Hi everyone,

I'm almost 10 weeks pregnant and finding it very hard to get myself into eating vegetalbles at the moment. I seem to constantly be craving pasta!

Anyone got any tips on how to make sure I keep vege's in my daily diet? Any recipes, etc?

Also is walking the best exercise during pregnancy or are there others I can do? Should I wait until the second trimester (exhausted atm) or should I force myself into action earlier rather than later?

Thanks in advance and baby dust to all :)

    • ANSWER:
Try cutting up some raw veggies (peppers, carrots, celery) and dipping in a yummy dip, that's a great way to get the veggies in. Pasta is good for you with the carbs, it's not the worst thing to eat at all!

I find walking is the best exercise. I felt terrible during my first trimester, but walked around the neighborhood every day in my second and third trimesters. I had a great, easy pregnancy and was down to my pre-baby weight four months after having my baby, with no dieting at all, just more walking.

I asked my OB if I should force myself to walk when I don't feel well and she said not to, when you don't feel well in the first trimester it's better to rest your body that overexert it. Just pick up walking when you feel better. Good luck and congrats!

I don't want to go on a diet, i'd just like some tips on healthy eating and healthy foods. Can anyone give me some tips? Also, can anyone recommend some good healthy eating books? Whenever i go into a bookshop there seems to be hundreds of books about the atkins diet, GI diet, and all the other crazy celebrity diets. I just want a book that isn't focused on losing a stone in a day lol, just something that's focused purely on eating a healthier diet without all the emphasis being on losing weight. I'd appreciate some healthy cooking ideas/recipes too if anyone has any! Thanks xx

    healthy eating tips this summer?
I'm 5'4, 16 years old and 135lbs. I want to loose 10-20lbs this summer. I'm starting cross country preseason this monday. I really need help on staying on the healthy train. I will eat perfectly for a couple days but then fall down. I love sugar so its really hard to stay away from things like ice cream and cookies. Plus I am constantly out with my friends, going to parties, and eating out.
I try to eat healthy but I always end up caving and part of me wants to eat things like bagels and chips. Although I love fruits and veggies.
Any tips of how to avoid these foods and keep eating healthy. And keeping my portions small. I have gotten off my habit of binge eating but it seems like to loose weight you have to eat nothing.
I would really like to go back to school this fall feeling more confident, healthy, and skinny.

    • ANSWER:
You are not overweight, and you don't need to lose 10 to 20 pounds. It sounds like you're being active, which is great.

Because you're not overweight and are active, you can indulge in bagels and cookies and chips and ice cream - just not all on the same day and not in huge portions! I would allow myself a one-a-day treat so that you don't develop a big craving for these things and don't overindulge.

  42. QUESTION:
Can you list five healthy eating tips?

    • ANSWER:
      1) Eat at least 5 servings of different fruits and vegetables every day. Don't eat any junk/snack type food until you've had at least 5 fruits/vegetables.

      2) Stick to whole, unprocessed foods such as whole grains, beans, fruits, vegetables, nuts. As much as you can, try to eat foods that don't have a brand name! So, for example, eat oatmeal (you can buy oats in the bulk bin of most grocery stores) instead of Honey Bunches of Oats.

      3) Eliminate partially hydrogenated oil and high-fructose corn syrup completely.

      4) Drink water instead of soda. If you really want juice, make it a nutritious juice, such as orange juice. Apple and grape juices have very little in the way of nutrients.

      5) Minimize animal products, especially fatty ones, as much as possible.

  46. QUESTION:
    Heart/blood healthy eating tips?
Best answer for the person that... gives me the best answer...

Anyway, I'm 19 years old, but I think I might have anemia. I've had it before because I don't really eat anything other than carbs... lol
So lately, I've had a super fast pulse, but very low blood pressure. (my pulse is usually around 100 bpm resting, but now it's about 105.)

Anyway, does anyone know a good meal plan, or where I can get one that will be extremely heart-healthy?
I have an 18.0 bmi, so I don't want to lose any more weight... I just need to fix this issue.
oh, and I'm going to the doctor soon over it, but I just want some eating tips :]
    thanks a bunch

    • ANSWER:
I suggest intaking a little red meat, that my assist in your resting bpm to be a little lower, and fix the anemia. Protien and iron are good for BMI, occasionally, and at 18.0 I don't think you have anything to fear from a little gain. I'd say just eat what ever you deem necessary and its okay to stray away from those carbs.

  47. QUESTION:
Anyone Have Any Healthy Eating Tips For Dogs?
I bought some beef ribs at the grocery store and boiled them to give my Bichon Frise is this good for her? I know cooking bones supposedly makes bones splinter, but I really do not see this happening. I boiled the ribs in water and gave her 1 bone meat and all. I plan on giving her 1 meaty bone a day. Probably gonna keep each bone around for about 3 days so she has a chance to chew on it and get the marrow out, so there will be no chance of the bone getting to be to small where it would become a choking hazard since there will be so many available to her that I will be switching out. I want to try and get away from a steady diet of dry dog food ( I use Merrick) but feel that she would really benefit from real meat and whatever nutrients the bones provide.
Please nobody tell me to feed my dog a raw bone, that is just not going to happen, there is no way I will contaminate my house with my dog dragging around raw meat on my floor. My question is does the beef ribs seem like the best meat and bone choice for my 12 pound Bichon Frise? Or is there something else that anyone can recommend that would be a healthy choice, or maybe a better way of cooking them for her. I thought boiling was a much better choice than baking or something that would dry the bone out, plus ribs do not have any pointy edges that is why I chose that. Does anyone else do this type of thing and what are the benefits of it? What other healthy tips can you suggest. I give my dog a teaspoon of yogurt every morning with some oatmeal for breakfast. The oatmeal is for her skin and the yogurt helps keep the red staining down without having to put her on antibiotics like that found in angel eyes. I discovered yogurt works very well at lightening the stains and helps her digestive tract. i also give her a brewers yeast and garlic tablet everyday, but that does not seem to do a thing to keep fleas away, but hopefully is beneficial in some other way.
Great responses you 2 thank you. I do feed her carrot sticks but only 3 mini ones a day. I use them as rewards for going potty outside.

I never thought that bones constipate dogs, that is good to know. I did read where a dogs poop will turn to dusty white in a few days if they eat alot of bones. Maybe I will limit her to the 4 pack of beef ribs I bought and spread them out for 7 days, hopefully that won't be too much for constipation.

thanks for the great tips I gave you both a thumbs up :)

    • ANSWER:
Caution, too many bones are constipating.
Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. "Vet approved" means they have a vet on staff to approve their product. In other words, someone paid to approve it. Same with foods most vets recommend. Salesmen "gift" vets then the vet recommends the food. Most vets are not nutritionalists! Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Tips for eating healthy while traveling?
With Thanksgiving coming up, my family and I are traveling and I need tips for choosing healthy options at restaurants. I am a huge health nut but the rest of my family kind of isn't so I need tips for choosing the healthiest options at restaurants. Are salads the safest and healthiest option? Thank you so much for your much needed help!

    • ANSWER:
Salads are usually the healthiest option unless, of course, it is loaded with dressing and such. When you go to a restaurant, check out the kids' menu and/or the side items. If you order from the kids' menu, you can eat good food in smaller portions. The side items menu usually has veggies you may order in place of or in addition to your meal.

  49. QUESTION:
    eating healthy tips?
Whats some tips on eating healthy
not necessarily cutting out some junk foods all together but just things i don't need to eat. I want to lose about 10 -15 pounds and remain at a good weight. can someone help?

    • ANSWER:
Very important - don't drink your calories. They add on to your daily calorie total, they don't replace calories from solid food. Stick with water and milk. Stay away from diet drinks, the artificial sweeteners will wreck havoc with your metabolism and you won't lose any more weight than if you drank regular soda.
Otherwise limit your sugars and white flour type foods. Stick with the least processed foods you can, mainly by shopping the perimeter of the grocery store. That's where the fruits, vegetables, fresh meat, and dairy are at.
