Health Food

It may not always be easy to determine what items are really good for you by looking at nutrition fact labels, but online health food stores often have far more details available to consumers about products such as health drinks. This can help clear up some of the confusion for online health food store shoppers who want the highest quality nutrition. In typical retail supermarkets, items such as natural foods and health drinks may have only one natural ingredient, but still be labeled as “natural”.

Online health food stores are usually very thorough in describing the true nature of their products. They assure customers that things like preservatives, isolated vitamins, artificial dyes or sweeteners are not included in their health drinks. The owners of these smaller operations may even know their suppliers personally and visit the manufacturing facilities. This can give them additional certainty that the products are processed at low temperatures to maintain whole food structures of the truly natural ingredients. Unfortunately, some of the so-called health drinks and foods at typical stores are devoid of nutrients because of the packaging processes, but consumers are never made aware of this fact.

Here are examples of a few items you may find at an online health food store that appear the same as typical store bought items on the surface, but are vastly different in the way they are processed:

· Vitamins - At an online health food store it is more likely these are whole food vitamins, not isolated, which provides the body with more effective absorption of nutrients.

· Natural low carb foods – These are not fake-food substitutes, but real, all natural food formulas prepared with your total health in mind.

· Health drinks and herbal teas - These are not enhanced vitamin waters or colored sport drinks, but herbal beverages with whole food ingredients.

Often, these online health food store products provide more effective results with fewer empty calories and less wasted money.

Many of the natural foods and health drinks from an online health food store can contain ingredients from plants grown on small farms, without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This is vastly different from mass-produced products made with so-called “natural” ingredients that have been manufactured on giant factory farms with artificial fertilizers and dangerous pesticides. You would be surprised to know how many non-organic foods, and even some labeled as “natural”, have been grown that way. The USDA defines organic products as those produced by farmers practicing soil and water conservation. In addition, organic farmers must make use of renewable resources to protect the environment. This is the type of detailed information you are likely to find in health drinks at a reliable online health food store.

Some individuals avoid healthy lifestyles because they believe the cost is too great or that alternative choices will rob them of modern day conveniences. However, it's important to realize now that modern technological advances can bring those conveniences to anyone with access to the Internet. Google or other search engines now provide an easy way to locate an “online health food store with all natural health drinks”.

Don’t be stuck under the false assumption that you can’t afford natural foods or health drinks without major sacrifices. It’s easier than ever to order health drinks from an online health food store and uncover more detailed information on what you are buying than you could ever find in a typical retail store.

I just fell in love with a health food store! What do you buy when you go to a health food store?
What are your regular/favorite items to get at your local health food store?

I just went for the first time a couple of days ago and I want to go again! Yes, it's expensive, but OMG I feel better when I eat healthy! It makes a world of difference!

  9. QUESTION:
Where is a good health food store in Nashville?
I am planning to move to Nashville Fall of 2012 to The Howe Garden Apartments can anyone tell me where some good health food stores are. I really want to start eating healthier and I am moving from TX.

    • ANSWER:
Hi, It looks like you are moving into East Nashville, welcome!

You're not going to find a lot of health food stores in the East at this time. The only one I know of, that is close-by to you would be, "The Turnip Truck" on 10th & Woodland St. There is supposedly a weekly East Nashville Farmer's Market. I don't know where it's held but it shouldn't be too hard to find out about.

For your healthy food shopping you're probably gonna have to make a 15-20 min drive over to the Green Hills area of Nashville. There is a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's market there.

It's interesting you asked this question. A local news station did a story on this very topic a few days ago. I'll paste the link so you can read it. The headline of the story was, "Many East Nashvillians Make A Drive For Good Food"

  10. QUESTION:
Is it okay to let a healthy cat eat urinary tract health food?
I have two cats. One eats the special urinary tract health food and the other has always eaten regular dry food. Is it okay and safe if he eats the special needs food? I need to know if I have to separate them somehow.

    • ANSWER:
I agree with Ken. Feeding the one cat that food is not good. It will just develop other health problems. Feed a species appropriate diet.
      http://www.catinfo.org/
I regret ever feeding my cat that prescription crap. He had crystals in his urine (that was caused by eating dry food) I went to the vet they said to feed a prescription dry food which now doesn't make any sense to me. He got up to 30 pounds, shedded like crazy, was getting arthritis, was at high risk of diabetes and had dandruff. So he didnt get crystals anymore but he had a lot of other problems. I switched to raw and he has so far lost 3 pounds, no more joint pain, not at rick of diabetes, a lot less shedding, a lot less dandruff and he is just overall healthy.

  16. QUESTION:
Can I get health food at a regular grocery store for less than at a health food store? where?
I am a total health nut, but being a health nut, means that I want the best quality I can get that doesn't have all those dyes, high fructose corn syrup, growth hormones, etc... But the problem is, is that health food stores can go way out of bugget for me. Where are some cheaper places for me to get good, healthy food for less?

    • ANSWER:
I've seen some of the Red Mill products at Kroger's.
Here in the mid-Louisiana area, (Lafayette, La) we have Vitamin Plus and some other scattered locations. Nice prices. I believe one of the reasons they have reasonable prices is because (1) they don't accept credit cards and pass that savings (no credit card trasaction fees) onto the customers (2) they don't have a scanning system at the register.

Note - NOT all foods at the health food store is healthy for you either.

  17. QUESTION:
What is the best all natural immune system booster from a health food store?
I was just really sick and had to be on antibiotics, so once I'm off them and better I'd like to go to the health food store and get things to kind of fix myself up, since taking any kind of "meds" makes me uncomfortable. Are Probiotics or any kind of protein drinks, etc any good? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Some of the most popular natural products for boosting the immune system are Colostrum, Mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi), IP-6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), Beta Glucans, Elderberry, Echinacea (should be taken short-term only), and any antioxidants.

As far as Probiotics, that's the beneficial bacteria that lives in your intestinal tract. If you are taking antibiotics for a short time, you should get some good Probiotics to take after the antibiotics are completely finished. If you take them together, the antibiotics will kill the Probiotics before they can be beneficial and it might lessen the potency or effect of the antibiotics... but you'll need the Probiotics to replenish your intestinal flora after the antibiotics have killed them all off.
Protein powders are just protein (like a hamburger)... they don't directly impact your immune system at all.
      Good luck!

  18. QUESTION:

Hi, I would like to know if raw, organic meat from a health food store is irradiated as I recently have learned that it sometimes is. Can you give me a reliable source? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Certified organic meat should never be irradiated as that would be against the USDA regulations that expressly ban irradiation of organic meats (and all other organic foods). Not certified organic meat not bought direct from the farmer likely is irradiated

To be really safe buy your meats direct from the farmer

  27. QUESTION:
Is diarrhea one of the side effects of urinary tract health food for cats?
Our cat had a urinary blockage a few months back and at our vet's suggestion we purchased Purina One's Urinary Tract Health Formula. This took care of his strained (sometimes non-existent) urination, but he has now developed fairly frequent diarrhea. He doesn't exhibit any other signs of distress/illness, so I'm fairly convinced that this isn't the sign of something more serious. I'm wondering how serious the diarrhea itself is and if there's anything simple we can do to treat it. I have considered switching the food, which I'll try after this batch runs out. Thanks in advance!
This isn't the recalled food. It's dry food, and to the best of my knowledge, the recall is for wet food only. Plus, the Purina One brand wasn't affected. Thanks for the answer though.

    • ANSWER:
I don't know that it's a given that that food will cause it. However, I did feed that to both my cats for the first 2 years of their lives. I mixed it with Purina's Weight Management about 1/2 and 1/2.

Poppy ALWAYS had loose stool. Not diarrhea, but always loosey goosey. Sophie has always been fine.

When I switched them to Natural Balance canned, Sophie stayed the same but Poppy improved IMMENSELY. No more weekly butt washing for me! We were both happy about that.

I recently had to give in and give her some dry food again (she went on strike). Since I wasn't about to completely lower my standards, I mixed it in with Evo. I had to buy Purina, and I chose the UTI one since that was partly what I fed before. She's been getting about 1/4 cup per day of the two mixed together, and almost immediately her stool softened again.

So I guess my point is - it's not a hard and fast rule, but it quite likely disagrees with your cat, just as it did with mine.

I'm now decreasing the amount of dry food they get, and I'll be cutting back on the Purina portion as well.

What I recommend to you is to first take a stool sample to the vet for analysis to rule out anything else. If nothing is found, I really recommend doing some research and changing your cat's diet.

It's well documented that cats who eat moist (canned or raw) diets are less likely to suffer from urinary tract issues. This is because they are taking in adequate water in their food. Cats have low thirst drives and most do not drink enough water. Just like humans, water intake is important to urinary health. So if your cat is getting enough moisture in his food, his urine will be less concentrated (and less smelly!) and UTI's will be less frequent.

    • ANSWER:
The natural way as God intended mate .......... Let Food Be Thy Medicine Soccrates said.

The more wholegrains and cereals like organic brown rice and fresh low sugar fruits like strawberries, pears and watermelon and fresh leafy and green vegies and crunchy vegies like carrotts and celery you eat the larger and easier your motions will be ........... drink more fresh filtered water too to ensure you are properly hydrated and to ease the elimination process...... cut out or right back on caffeine and sodas, pop and soft drinks too as they will dehydrate you terribly and wash out your water soluble B complex of vitamins which are so essential for healthy neural, immune and digestive functioning........ wholegrains and cereals and leafy and green vegies and lean organic meats are rich in the B complex of vitamins.

chew each mouthfull at least 20 times ...... to aid in digestion too ....... don't combine proteins and carbs in one sitting ...... leave a 2 - 3 hour gap between each to ease the digestive process ....... eat fruit by itself ie ~ leave an hour after fruit before eating anything else.

Pinpoint any food intolerances you may have such as lactose intolerance .......... lactose intolerance can cause bloating, gassiness, belching, constipation, acid reflux, achy bones, moodiness and irritability, brain frizzing ........ unaddressed food intolerances contribute enormously to bad digestion and compromise your whole system ...... eat more leafy and green vegies and low sugar fruits ......... green vegies lightly stemed or raw like broccolli, celery, buk choy, kale, chard are all rich in calcium and magnesium (green vegies for magnesium and calcium fruits for calcium) and perhaps ditch the milk and dairy for 5 days and see if that speeds the process for you.

oh, eat more crunchy vegies too like raw celery, raw or lightly steamed broccolli, raw carrotts ....... they act like a broom and sweep the colon clean ...... green vegies are particularly good for helping with constipation ..... and eat the brown rice ....... one bowl full a day of brown rice, plenty of water and crunchy vegies will nail it for you mate.

anything you can buy in a supplement, powder, tablet, pill ...... will never do the same job as actually paying attention to the way your body feels when you eat ....... and taking note of how the food you are eating makes you feel .......... if you get symptoms of headaches and migraines, irritability and moodiness, fatigue and exhaustion, nasty mood swings, achy bones, bloating and constipation after eating a particular food ........ eliminate it ........ strip your diet back to green vegie juice and organic brown rice or organic quinoa and slowly add in one food per day and note how your body reacts........ if it disagrees with you don't eat it.

  34. QUESTION:
What are some healthy foods or health food products good for oral health?
Not necessarily looking for a natural remedy for a toothache or anything specific, just wondering if there's any supplements or even foods that promote good oral health, healthy teeth, etc?

    • ANSWER:
Good oral health requires adequate calcium in your diet, and many people don't get enough. So try to include low-fat milk, yogurt, etc. Also, calcium is absorbed much more readily if you are also getting plenty of vitamin D, so you want to make sure that you are getting that as well.

But mostly, oral health depends on keeping stuff *away* from your teeth. Acidic drinks (orange juice, sodas, etc.) and food particles are the enemy of good oral health. Hardly anyone brushes for long enough (at least two full minutes, and at least twice a day), and not enough people floss every day. If you do both of those things, that's more important than any supplement you could take.

  35. QUESTION:
why does it seem the only people at the health food store are drug addicts or ex hippies?
okay maybe a few are health freaks, but why do the drug addict destroy their body and then go to the health food store to try and live healthy. HUMMM good advice, your health will improve by stop using crack, caine, and stop drinking so much. duh.

    • ANSWER:
I think that's quite stereotypical and not necessarily accurate. However, there are similarities between the sort of people you describe and those who "believe" in AltMed. These people often use AltMed as an adjunct to science based medicine. The hippie subculture in the 1960s and 70s saw the rejection of science and anything to do with the "establishment". This era also brought about a lot of nonconformism.

It was also around this time that people started taking more of an interest again in eastern religions and spiritualities as well as the resurgence for mystic, occult, and magical phenomenas. These people also buy into conspiracy theories, they think "big Pharma" is out to get them. The problem is, it often means they are putting their own health at risk.

Also, many drug addicts who have reformed, strive to live healthier lives and commit the logical fallacy of assuming something is better and safer just because it is natural. This of course does not follow.

  36. QUESTION:
Are raw cashews dangerous, like the ones you buy in the health food store?
I have been eating them for months w/ no problems but someone just told me that they should not be eaten raw. He specified that they should not be eaten while harvesting. So I am wondering if out of the garden raw is the same as raw in the health food store?

    • ANSWER:
Every so often, a well-meaning Co-op customer will alert us to the information that raw cashews are toxic. While it is true that in their natural state, the cashew nut or kernel is encased in a shell that contains caustic oils, these oils are extracted from the shell and used industrially. Even “raw” cashews are processed to remove this oil, and so are safe to eat.

People who are allergic to cashews cannot eat them at all, cooked or not. Cooking does not affect allergens and does not render food safe for someone with a true allergy.

  39. QUESTION:
How do we know the Health Food stores aren't ripping us off?
I bought 1 lb of "organic" flax seed for .90. ( I'm in Canada ) I than happened to notice that at the grocery store flax seed in the bulk bins was .28 /lb!!! How do I know that the stuff in the home made looking bag and label at the "Health Food Store" isn't just the stuff from the grocery store marked up in price? Is there any type of regulation when they get there business licence? Or any type of "checking"?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi.

I 'm not sure about Canada - but in the US the word "organic" is regulated when applied to a food product - it must meet certain standards.

But even there this is a law - there have been a lot of articles about how some retailers and food producers really push the limits on what is really organic.

I think the only way to tell would be to have the product tested in a laboratory but that would be expensive. So in short - the answer is "you really don't know if they are cheating you or not."

How can I start to eat with health food? ?
I am 5'0 and weight 120lbs How can I lose weight by faster? I want lose weight 5 lbs. How can I startin takin care of myself and eat health food? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Cut out sugar, white flour, fried and fast food, and soda pop. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, fish, skinless white meat chicken, and lean meat. Drink lots of water and MOVE. Walking and swimming are the best overall exercise, but the treadmill, exercise bike, real bike, jogging, are all good. Start gradually, and work up to at least 25 minutes or more. If you like dancing, dance your heart out to your favorite music in your house. Work up a sweat! Take a brisk walk the best day.
Back to eating. Eat slowly. Try putting your fork or sandwich between bites. You'll be amazed. You'll eat half as much. Stop when you feel content, not full. It takes 20 minutes to feel the fullness.
Eat whole wheat bread with lite margarine like Smart Balance. Put that on a baked potato too.
There's an excellent start for you. Good luck! :)
