Our life and health is impacted every day by the food we eat. Your body needs a constant supply of energy to fuel your heartbeat, breathing, digestion and to help repair body tissue. This energy is measured in calories. To maintain a healthy balance with calorie intake and fat intake in mind, you need to find a balance in the food you choose to eat.

There are five main food groups which people should be eating a varied mixture of on a daily in order to maintain healthy eating. Starchy foods make up one of these groups. Starchy foods refer to bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. These foods are your main source of carbohydrates and make up half of your daily energy intake. You need a sufficient amount of starchy food just like you need a strong amount of dairy products. Dairy products are rich in protein and your best source of vitamin D and Calcium. As well as starchy foods and dairy products you also need some intake of fats and sugar. Your fat intake should not exceed 35% but you should not cut it out of your diet completely as fat is the most energy dense nutrient that your body can get.

Probably the most important out of the five food groups however is fruit and vegetables. It is said that you should have at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. There is strong evidence that by doing this you are reducing the risk of things such as heart disease.

There is strong evidence that suggests by eating healthy you are reducing the risk of illness such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and several types of cancer, including bowel cancer. Having a healthy diet is important and can potentially extend your life.

Healthy eating can however be overlooked when it comes to dieting. The image of slim women is all that greets us in fashion magazines, the music industry and the film industry. These images are burned into our minds as what we should all look like and women and men across the country are doing anything they can to lose weight, including risking their health.

Every where we look there are new diet fads appearing, this is especially evident across the internet. The list of these diets seems never ending and most offer a quick fix to lose weight fast. One of these diets is the Atkins diet. On the Atkins diet you are encouraged to eat all types of meat, cheese, eggs and fats (butter or oils); completely throwing out the fact you are supposed to keep your fat intake down to around 35%. You are also told to limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat on this diet, which again throws out the fact that carbohydrates make up half of your daily energy intake.

Another diet fad that has grown in popularity is the liquid diet. Even though medically it is only really safe to go on this diet if you are going to undergo a medical procedure such as a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy; people are using it as a way of losing weight fast. In certain cases of extreme obesity, a liquid diet is used to make the person lose weight. A liquid diet either partially replaces meals or completely does meaning that your only intake will be fluids such as teas and juices.

A liquid diet could possibly disrupt the natural flow of your body and will not provide you with enough nutrients, energy or protein to get you through the day. A liquid diet will also not teach individuals the requirements of healthy eating to maintain weight loss over a long period of time.

Diet fads are growing more popular but these are just quick fixes and will not help you in a long term sense. The best way in order to loss weight as well as keeping a good balance of the five food groups is to eat the right foods in the right quantity. Cut out sugary snacks and replace them with more fruit intake; vary your diet so you aren’t eating the same things over and over.

As well as eating the right type of food you should also start a regular exercise programme which will get you in shape faster than any diet fad will. Regular exercise will not only keep you healthy it could also be the reason as to why you live longer as taking regular exercise will help to prevent against things such as diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Medical guidelines state that healthy adults should be getting at least 30 minutes of intense activity five days a week. This exercise can be anything from walking, mowing the lawn, dancing, cycling, any type of sport, aerobics or even weight training. The key to exercise is finding one that best suits you.

Exercise combined with a good diet, which incorporates all of the five food groups is all you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to lose the weight that you want.

I want to do a diet, for 2 weeks, where I will drink 2 to 3 bottles of juice that contain the following:
Calories 130
Calories from fat 0
Total Fat 0.5g 1%
Saturated Fat 0g 0%
Trans Fat 0%
Cholesteral 0%
Protein 1g
Spirulina 1,000 mg
and other vitamins

That will be by far my main diet. Is this an ok idea or not?
If its okay to do it for 2 weeks, how about a month?

				ANSWER:
its not ok to do for any amount of time.
you will lose water weight and muscle but NOT fat. also you will slow down your metabolism dramatically and end up having higher body fat percentage.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

			QUESTION:
diet, healthy ??
if it eat healthy, morning breakfast lunch and light dinner and do yoga will ilose weight?? Thnks

				ANSWER:
Hi,

You can lose weight if you eat healthy and do regular exercises - could be yoga (in my opinion rsults from yoga are not so quick, but it leads to weight loss), weight training and cardio.

About eating healthy - eat often and less, 5-6 small meals per day are better than 3 meals. See example of healthy weight loss diet plan here http://www.100abdominalexercises.com/fast_weight_loss_diet_plan.aspx

Remember that good diet gives all neccesary nutrients to your body. If you eat only good food - weight loss will come naturaly, without any starving or limitation.

			QUESTION:
is a diet of apples and water a healthy way to lose wight?
is going on an apple and water diet healthy? a friend and i were talking and she told me her diet plan consisted of just apples and water. she drank as much water as she wanted and ate as much apples as she wanted. i know you need protine and calcium and fiber and all that jazz to keep u healthy but she insisted that taking vitamins it should be fine. im looking to lose wight myself so i was wondering if this would be an effective and healthy way to do so?

				ANSWER:
You will loose weight like my friend did, then two months later he is back where he started, he also felt sick and weak.

I wont ramble on with the usual - we both know anything beyond a good diet and exercise will only offer a temporary solution - your body is where it is at due to your eating and exercise habits - the body adapts to the new diet by using fuel reserves (fat) and muscle tissue - you essentially weaken the fat burning furnace and slow your metabolism (it will be starving, and therefore new fuel will be taken and stored as a reserve/fat) - when you resume your normal eating and exercise habits you will adapt again similar to how you are now, perhaps 2lbs lighter, perhaps 2lbs heavier, but almost certainley slightly more body fat due to the stress of the above diet.

Will you look better with clothes on? sure, for a few weeks... will it do anything beyond that and last? not really...

			QUESTION:
Is the Cinnamon and honey diet healthy for a 13 year old girl?
It stats that you can lose up to 3 o 5 pounds easily every week without changing anything in your diet just put a teaspoon of honey and half a teaspoon of cinnamon in water and boil it and split it into two cups drink one 30mins before breakfast and one 30 mins before bed and i would still work out even though it said it works well for belly fat is this healthy for a 13 yr old.

				ANSWER:
That sounds ridiculous, and doesnt sound healthy at all. You're 13, your metabolism is at its highest, you just need to spend more time outside, hanging with your friends, playing sports, and less time on the computer, or watching tv. Turn on some music and dance! Just have fun doing things and living life! Dont worry so much about losing weight! If you do, do sports! and Eat healthy fruits and veggies like strawberries and pineapples, or veggies and ranch and less unhealthy foods, cut down on snacks etc. I know you want a quick fix, and the best advice I can give you other than the above, especially for belly fat is swimming, running, and dancing! Hope that helps

Is a vegetarian diet healthy for a growing teenager?
My 15 year old son has been on a vegetarian diet for a little over a month now. He still eats dairy and eggs, but he has eliminated all meat including fish. He is on the thin side so he definitely shouldn't lose any weight. Is this a healthy diet for him at his age?

				ANSWER:
Being a lacto-ovo vegetarian is very healthy as you are still getting plenty of good complete protein from your dairy products and eggs as well as vitamin B12. There is plenty of iron in vegetarian foods such as nuts, broccoli, spinach, beans, peas and lentils.

You cannot lose weight using Low Fat Diets. Low fat foods have been popular for more than 15 years, but yet our society is getting more overweight as each year passes. This fact alone should tell you that eating a purely low fat menu is not the answer to losing weight.

Is this diet healthy or really bad for me?
I want to lose about 20 lbs so I can play in an adult football league, and heard about a diet that contains only lemonade, maple syrup, and water. It's not really a diet. It's a cleanse...so it's not actually designed for you to lose weight on it. You will lose weight, but you'll gain it back when you start eating again.

You can get enough calories from it, but you will probably feel weaker since it doesn't have enough nutrients.

			QUESTION:
What are some healthy diet suppliments to boost my weight loss?
Do you know any healthy diet suppliments that are also cheap? I'm an overweight teen and I'm 5'9, big boned and about 50 lbs overweight. I exercise and eat very healthy but I haven't lost as much as I believe I can. Plus my family is short on money.

				ANSWER:
The MOST important thing is to eat naturally..without medicines, chemicals, "starving" your self etc.

first, it would be best for you to eat as healthy as possible..this will also help you considerably to lose weight gradually and naturally..

eat fresh fruits, vegetables, drink plenty of WATER..avoid all cokes, caffeines, smoking, alchohol etc. as these also add weight as well as they contain chemicals which disturb your natural bio rythmns as well as brain chemistry. try not to eat too much meat, and the meat you should eat should be "lean meat" such as steamed chicken and rice, or steamed fish with rice..and vegetables,, this should be your staple diet rice and vegetables with fruits..AVOID "JUNK FOOD" and "Fast Food" as this type of food is very unhealthy, lacking in vitamins really and has plenty of fattening molecules which make one gain weight and is not good .

if you snack,, try fruits with yogurt or fruit yogurt and nuts.. nuts are very healthy for your body .and contain proteins.

go for walks every evening or morning or whenever you get time each day for 1 hour or 2 hours..make this somewhere you enjoy walking even if you have to drive a bit to there..and make this a daily routine..you will enjoy it once you get into it ..and it makes you feel great after..just walking for 1 hour or 2 hours.

if you do this..every day for one month ..you should lose around 10 pounds (.714 stone) per month until you get to your natural healthy weight.. look up on the internet for an idea of what your weight for your height should be ..and when you get to this weight,,your body will look very nice and you will feel very good.

10 pounds (.714 stone ) each month in 3 months you should lose 30 pounds (2 stones, 2 pounds)..for sure...but no junk food and dont drink alcohol or smoke, dont eat junk..just healthy food with vitamins and walking 1 hour or 2 hours every day..and drink plenty of water..this is guaranteed way to lose weight naturally and for good, if you stick to this, which you should,,as it makes you feel so much more positive due to the vitamins and lack of chemicals making you feel depressed...

btw, forgot to mention,,just in case you dont know how to really make healthy meals..buy a "food steamer" at your local deparment store..they are very cheap and work very well..as well as buy a "rice cooker" which is also very cheap..eating rice is a great way to get your necessary carbs "healthy carbs" to lose weight and has lots of natural energy inside. you can buy asian rice at most large supermarkets or if you have a local oriental market..they sale quality asian rice.. thai or indian rice is good "jasmine rice".. buy corn or canola oil to sprinkle on vegetables or rice before steaming to add to taste as well as you can buy several nice spices like "cumin" or "Curry powders", etc.just sprinkle on the vegetables before steaming to give nice taste.

drink "Green Tea" as this is very healthy and helps burn extra fat faster...you can buy quality green tea at most oriental shops or large supermarkets as well

			QUESTION:
What is a healthy diet to get lean on that's realistic to follow?
What is a healthy and realistic diet to slim down?

I have tried crazy diets, and they usually last a couple weeks, then I go back to eating crap! What is something more realistic and long term and healthy....something that I can keep up with. I want to loose about 50 pounds in 6 months.

				ANSWER:
you probably can't lose 50lbs in 6months unless you eat less than 1500cals a day or if you exercise for hrs. a day..
eating 1500cals is safe to do but you will have to get use to being hungry each and every day of the 6months. i did it for 5months and lost 33lbs.
if you think you can lose 50lbs in 6months without feeling hungry each day then i don't think that is realistic.

			QUESTION:
How can I manage a healthy diet with a family?
Hi everyone. I have four children and have found myself putting on a lot of weight lately. I want to get fit and healthy again (and fit into some of my clothes!!). The youngest is only 1 and it is hard to go for walks or the gym with 4 kids to take care of. My husband does shift work and I am kind of stuck. I love to bake and always make things for the kids and end up eating it too. How can I work a healthier diet and somehow do some exercise with my family and kids in tow? Any suggestions? Has anyone tried exercise DVD's? I think I'd get really bored with that.

				ANSWER:
My sister does exercise DVDs and really likes them. I have borrowed a few of hers but I would rather play music and dance. You can put the youngest in a stroller/buggy/wagon and all go for a walk.

Put your WHOLE FAMILY on a healthy eating plan. Good eating habits need to be developed at a very young age. Children can be so active it seems that they never put on weight; but as a teacher every year I see more and more overweight children.

Did you know that the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables for children and adults is 10 serving a day? A serving is 8 bites... children's bites are smaller.

Don't give up your baking, however, bake fruit pies instead of cake made with white flour. Try using whole wheat and other whole grains in your baking.
Use none fat powdered milk for baking... it is healthier and cheaper too. Add a few nuts and also fruit to your baked goods.

There are many healthy food sites. I'll put my favorite the the source box. There are many good ones... Yahoo's food site is handy to pull up, too.

			QUESTION:
What are good healthy diet plans for men?
Does anyone know of any good healthy diet plans for men. A healthy diet plan that is not boring and has many varieties of food.

				ANSWER:
First thing you need to understand about your diet is too much sugar in your blood will make you fat no matter what diet you are on or how much you work out. Too many ketones in your blood will prevent you from using the sugar in your blood as energy. Too few ketones in your blood will cause you to burn your blood glucose off too fast. So you need to eat small portions of carbs and protein about every 3 hours.
Another thing to know is that trans fat, hydrogenated oil and polyunsaturated fat causes type 2 diabetes. To raise your metabolism stop eating ANYTHING that has these in them. Polyunsaturated fat is ok in small quantities now and them. Also Cholesterol is a key thing. Bad cholesterol is high in red meats, dark meats, pork and even turkey and chicken breast. These types of cholesterol get inside the cell and clog it up. This prevents the cell from being able to accept sugar and burn it off. Where as the trans fats and hydrogenated oils form plaque on top of the cell wall and prevents insulin from being to stick to the cell therefore preventing sugar from being absorbed by the cell. These are the things that lower your metabolism rate as you get older and lead to heart disease and diabetes. To avoid this simply avoid these fats and cholesterols.
Any modified food starch, flour, enriched flour, corn starch, potato starch, high fructose syrups etc. all will raise your blood sugar levels higher and faster than pure sugar will. So watch out for things that say "lite" and "sugar free" and "diet". Many of these things use these to elevate your blood sugars and keep you addicted by tricking you into thinking they are better for you than stuff with sugar in it. That is not to say that sugar is good for you but it is better for you than modified food starch for sure.
You will want to eat 2 green apples a day. The high level of soluble fiber and high level of pectin in them help slow the uptake of sugar into your blood stream. Also lots of green leafy vegetables will provide you with nutrients you need while slowing your sugar uptake. Never eat a carb without eating a protein with it. Never eat any carb that is a simple carb or has a hi glycemic index i.e. corn, potatoes, bread.
Bread is ok if you get 100% whole grain with no additives or preservatives. In fact, this is a necessity. Real peanut butter with no trans fat and no additives is an awesome complex carb. Pecans are magical on blood sugar levels. Eat a handful and if your blood sugar is too high they will lower it. If it is too low they will raise it. And pecans will sustain your blood sugar levels for hours.
You want to have a 3:1 ratio of omega 3 fatty acids to omega 6 fatty acids. So fish without lots of mercury and olive oil for cooking is a must. Flax seeds are also good.
Taking about 10mg of a supplement called MDM, vitamin c, calcium, vitamin D and b12 are all great for making the cell walls more elastic which will raise your metabolism, help rid your body of plaque, and lessen your need for insulin. Another great trick is using about a half table spoon of cinnamon per day. Cinnamon actually has a chemical in it that acts like insulin and reduces the risk of diabetes and speeds up your metabolism.
You want to eat red meat at least once a week and at most a few times a week. Chicken is something to eat at least a few times a week but not more than once a day. Cod, Tilapia and Salmon are the meats of necessity.
Oatmeal is good for slowing the digestive process also, but it also burns off fast into sugar and spikes the blood sugar good. So it is important to not eat more than half a serving at a time and eat it with pecans and protein. Preferably egg whites cooked in olive oil with salsa or fresh veggies.
Greek yogurt is awesome for digestion and low in sugars. SILK is an awesome source of protein and carbs verses high sugar milk (11gm per serving = 1cup, not glass).
Make sure you watch all your pre mixed cooking spices. Most of them have modified food starch.
Beans are a great complex carb. If you are going to eat a potato try to limit to half of a red potato tops before working out. Not all fruits are good. green apples, grapefruit are awesome. Oranges are borderline and most other fruits are high in fructose. Avoid granny smith apples though. Those are horrible on the glycemic index. Broccoli is a must.

			QUESTION:
What is a safe diet pill to take along with a healthy diet and exercise?
I am 5'1 155 lbs so I need to lose 25 lbs. I already am on a healthy balance diet and exercised regularly but I want an added kick to it. I am scared to take diet pills because of the side effects but does anyone know of any with no side effects which are safe but actually work?

				ANSWER:
Mimi -
Alli is the only over the counter weight loss pill approved by the FDA. There are only three prescription weight loss medications approved. Do you think that if any of them REALLY worked we would have a billion a year industry in "weight loss" supplements?
The big three pharmaceuticals would dominate the market.
Approved or otherwise, none of these weight loss supplements guarantee anything unless you establish a healthy diet and exercise program.
So why not just establish a healthy diet and exercise program and keep your money?
You will be spending somewhere between and per day on a product that is not approved or guaranteed to do anything!
The only weight loss supplement I recommend is a basic multivitamin.
Good luck.

			QUESTION:
How long does it take for healthy diet to work?
For the past years I've had the typical SAD diet. Too much fried, too much sugar, too much everything and all the wrong things. I'm thinking about starting a vegetarian diet and adding more raw fruits and veggies to my diet.

I was wondering how long would it take for the healthy diet to start working and helping my body. I keep hearing about health benefits from vegetarian diets -- how long before those benefits work for me?

				ANSWER:
There is no magic pill or program for weight loss, regardless of what others tell you.

When I first started weight watchers, it took me about 6 - 8 weeks before I saw steady benefits i.e. steady 2 - 3 lb loss per week.

You need to follow a sensible diet and start exercising. Start eating fruits and vegetables and lean protein.

There is a great show on the Lifestyle channel, Cook Yourself Thin. They show you how to change your fave recipes to low fat, low calorie. It’s a really neat show.

Their idea is that you take your goal weight and multiply by 10. This number is your maximum daily calories.

You need to eat what's called filling foods to not get hungry all the time. Things like apples and bananas are filling. Almost all types of beans, garbanzo, green, kidney, re-fried fat-free, beets, cauliflower are some of the many filling veggies.

Avoid over-use of salt, you will retain water.

Drink water, and if you don’t like it plain try a little squeezed lemon or lime in it. Drink at least 8 ozs before each meal.

You may also want to try switching from 3 meals a day and eating 4 or 5 lighter meals.

Exercise, ... if you don’t already start walking or anything. Just don’t overdo it at first or you will find reasons to stop.

Losing weight requires a lifestyle change.

			QUESTION:
What is the least amount of fat you can eat in a healthy diet?
I know your body needs some fats, but a lower fat diet is certainly healthiest. What is a low fat diet? I mean, going completely fat free is unhealthy, but eating 65 grams of fat (recommended for a 2,000 calorie diet) is not necessary. Can I be healthy just getting the fats from healthy foods like breads and oatmeal? Sorry for all of the questions- I could just brainstorm on this topic.

				ANSWER:
Too often, this question is inaccurately answered. Weight loss guru's tend to tout what they see as problems with fat intake, and many people who think they are cardiologists speak up with false information.

There is a lot more to proper nutrition than total calories or someone's errorenous ideas about "max fat grams." For example, you have to consume fat with carbohydrates in order to metabolize the carbs. Fat in the diet is necessary for absorption of fat soluable vitamins. There are many facts to consider.
Here is a question presented to a nutritionist on this topic:

QUESTION: I eat a balanced diet except I concentrate on the fat content. If it's available in non-fat such as milk or cheese, that's what I buy and eat. My fat intake is typically between 5 and 10% of my calories. I do weight train and do cardio workouts three times a week. Is my fat intake too low?

ANSWER: Possibly. Consider these facts about your body's need for fat.

It is recommended that people consume 30% of total daily calories from fat, 55% from carbohydrates and 15% from protein. So, you are not consuming nearly enough fat in your diet according to these guidelines.

Fats perform many vital roles to aid in the body's functions. Triglycerides, the main form of fat in the body and in foods, constitute most of the stored energy in the body. Triglycerides yield over twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrates and protein (fats provide 9 calories per gram, while carbohydrates and protein provide 4 calories per gram). The free fatty acids, released from triglycerides are the major source for fuel for the body at rest and during light activity.

Triglycerides and other lipids (fat) in foods also carry fat-soluble vitamin A ,D, E and K to the small intestine. In doing so, lipids aid in absorption of these nutrients. Without fat you are at risk for developing deficiencies of these vitamins.

Food fat causes the stomach to empty more slowly than either carbohydrates or protein and it imparts satiety - the satisfied feeling you have after eating. If you reduce your fat intake below 20% of total energy intake, you will get hungry quicker.

The essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, are substances that need to come from the diet. They are necessary building materials for molecules and compounds that perform such vital functions in your body as regulation of blood pressure, blood clotting, immune response and childbirth. Excellent sources of these essential fatty acids are salad dressings containing Canola or soybean oil, salmon, tuna and sardines.

Another thing to be aware of is when fat is removed from a product, something else must be added, usually carbohydrates in order to maintain a desirable taste and texture. For this reason, many fat-reduced and fat-free products are still very energy dense - containing a high amount of calories. Remember that calories count too, no matter if they come from fat, carbohydrates or protein so be sure to moderate your portions if you consume a lot of fat reduced products. Consider the increase in the number of low fat foods while the American public's average weight has gone up. Low fat and fat free foods are not the magic solution for weight loss.

Have you tried the Healthy Body Calculator? If you put your physical data and activities in, it will calculate a healthy amount of calories and fat based on your nutrition goals.

A trained and licensed nutritionist is your friend. There is way too much nutrition quackery in the world today. If you read something about nutrition, check for the author's credentials before you take it as fact. The word "Moderation" is key, and if you eat fresh healthy foods in moderation, you will be eating a healthy diet.

Hope this helps answer your question.

They need calcium from the bones from the fish they eat and they get protein from the fish bones. They need leafyu greens like Romaine lettuce,Kale squash,grapes,strawberries..google vehggioes with vitamin A and see what you have at home. You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium daily drop 20 or so in the tanks and watch them disappear in a few days! When I got these two 36 yrs ago all we had in back then were goldfish to feed , so after 36 yrs and still going strong. They can eat goldfish!
This way when they swim for their dinner they get exercise also!
I also feed dried cubed blood worms or tubiflex worms at least 5 times a week.
They sleep at the bottom of rivers, streams. lakes or ponds or your tank to avoid predators like coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks, possums, raccoons and even some wide mouth bass.

***TOSS in a bird cuttle bone in the water for calcium that will promot better shell growth, it will dissolve real slow and if they eat it that’s fine!!

They can have garden worms, meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, dragon flies and anything that moves, but only as a treat. These also have protein special garden worms!
They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are bad for them, any other leafy greens will do) for vitamin A that they need at least 3 to 4 times a week.
You probably already know that they get sick easily, shell rot, respiratory sickness, lopsided swimming, coughing, blowing bubbles from their nose. Fungus white cotton patches on their skin?
**Swollen cloudy eyes which means lacking in Vitamin A. Which we all need for good eyes. Google ‘vegetables with Vitamin A.

Contact the “www.anapsid.org/societies, for a turtle vet / RESCUE in your city and state.

May I suggest The bigger the environment the bigger the healthier the turtle. Remember 10 gallons for every inch of turtle. I have used kiddy pools and plastic pond liners from most nurseries and worked great.
Did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light UVA/UVB for up to 8 hrs a day for the vitamin D that they need to grow. So that means getting a turtle dock also.
Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always. These turtles in captivity do not hibernate their eating may slow down some but they will not hibernate. These are not cuddly pets and will bite very very hard. Under 4" they carry a disease called 'salmonella'. So you must wash after every handling.

Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they poop allot. You need a good filter system!
Total Body length: 5-8" average for males, up to 12 inches max for females. Life span: 15-25+ years
Males have the longer front nails and are used in mating. And are considered mature at about 5 yrs old. You can’t start sexing till about 3” across.
Gravel larger than they can swallow.

			QUESTION:
Is a healthy diet more important when you are young or when you are old?
Are there any reliable studies on this issue? On the one hand, I can see how a healthy diet when you are young might set in motion some long term positvie health benefits. On the other hand, it may be the case that children's bodies are so efficient at squeezing the nutrition out of the foods that they eat that a child's poor diet may not have the detrimental effects that an older person's poor diet would. My 8 year old son's diet is very limited, yet surprisingly, at least to me, he acts and looks very physically healthy.

				ANSWER:
Both - it's important at every stage of your life. When you're young and your body is still growing, it's very important to have all the right nutrients for building bones, teeth, muscles, organs, etc., as well as providing energy. It's true also that reinforcing healthy food choices for a child will set a pattern which he will probably follow throughout his life, and this is further protection for his health.

Recent studies are showing more and more how important good nutrition is as we're aging, though. Some conditions thought to be unavoidable or irreversible as a result of aging have responded well to a healthy diet. Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes have shown greatly reduced symptoms in studies of adults with these health problems after they were put on diets with specific foods in them. We know now, too, that a number of fruits & vegetables have strong anti-oxidant properties, preventing a number of cancers and slowing or stopping the spread of cancer in people who have the disease.

A healthy diet strengthens our immune systems and cleanses toxins from our bodies, helping us fight off disease and helping our whole bodies function better. This is true from infancy to old age. I had heard from a pediatrician that if a child goes through a period of being picky or eating very few foods, it's not cause for concern. I've watched my 6 and 8 year-old sons go through phases of not eating certain foods, and I've seen them slowly come around to eating those foods they used to refuse. The best thing to do is to keep offering your son a healthy variety, and show by your example to do the same; these will have an influence on what he eats.

As far as sources for studies on diet and health, I've seen numerous articles in the last few years in medical, health, and nutrition magazines reporting studies about nutrients in foods and their individual properties. You could go to the library and go back through a year of issues from a particular publication and easily find several articles on the subject. A good one with reliable sources and reports on these studies is Prevention magazine; I read this one myself.

			QUESTION:
Have you got a healthy diet schedule for me?
Ok, so if you have read my last 2 questions you will know i am trying to make it into a Professional wrestling career so have you got a diet that's healthy. Its mainly focused on building muscle, energy, good health and losing fat. So any schedules or advice would be greatly appreciated.

				ANSWER:
The first thing my son did when he got into wrestling was to get tons of grapefruit and every morning he drank a couple of cups of coffee and ate 1/2 grapefruit(eat a whole if they are small)with it. The caffeine is actually a fat burner and some acid in the grapefruit allows that caffeeine to burn more fat longer. In addition, my son ate a lot of salad and a lot of protein--for snacks it was fruits instead of cookies and goodies, and I have to say that it worked so well for him that I recently started a grapefruit regimen myself and it really works. This is what I do:
1 24oz cup of fat free or low fat yogurt
1-2 cups of coffee and 1/2 to 1 grapefruit in the morning--plenty of water in between.
lunch:
I only eat European Rye bread from Russia or Germany because it is not made with yeast and doesn't keep you hungry---I put butter and lunnchmeat on it or butter and preserves--whatever I like--2 of those slices and I am full. For snacks I usually have fresh fruit, whatever I got in the house.
For supper I eat a lot of veggies and a lot of lean meat(chicken, turkey)--my son ate steaks as well. I try to avoid all starchy carbs in the evening. Sometimes I do eat fruit, but I have to say to my amazement that I do not even get so hungry that I want to snack a lot. I think it's the yogurt--it is shockful of protein, but also loaded with carbs which provide energy to the body. I hope this helps

			QUESTION:
Is the Raw Food Diet really the most healthy diet in the world?
Is it the most healthy diet due to the fact that you are basing your diet on fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, nuts, dried fruit, and seaweed? I consume these things already but I have some non-fat yogurt, milk, and free-range meats (beef, poultry, lamb, etc) in my diet also. Is this best, or would it actually be more beneficial to go raw?

				ANSWER:
Best to not just listen to anyone else and follow your body. If something effects you a bit adversly, then totally cut it out of your diet.
Then your body vibration will improve and the next item, that didn't effect you before will start to effect you a bit. So cut that out also.
Follow this path along deleting as you get sensitive and you will end up on the ideal diet for yourself, if you do it diligently
I did and ended up on raw food for three years ,and have been a vegan sportsman for 36 more years now [57 years young now]
I love and feel great on green smoothies [green veg from garden, mango and apple fresh juice, spiralina, a few walnuts, and dates if you like .definitely gives you a positive lift. l am going to start a green smoothie club here.
QUESTION:
What is a good and healthy diet for a ballet dancer?
Say you have a 105 lb ballet dancer. 5 foot 3

She exercises 8 hours a week in ballet classes and then 4 hours or so in aerobics classes.

How many calories approximately should she be taking in daily?

What is a good diet for her in order to keep at a healthy weight?

				ANSWER:
depending on age, i would not worry too much about calorie intake.
if there is a low calorie option, you can have it, but quantity is really the issue. don't think drinking a diet soda will help. if you want a soda, just drink the real thing because there isn't much of a difference (unless you're diabetic).

you shouldn't really have more than one soda a day (about 6-7 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 oz can).

drink a lot of water instead. most normal people don't drink enough water each day, and most dancers i know don't either (and they need far more than normal people).

you should eat a fairly balanced diet (eat from all your food groups, lots of veggies, fruit, and dairy). women naturally have issues with retaining calcium and with bone density. women that are extremely active (especially dancers) have weaker bones than most and require more calcium than normal women to keep their bones healthy. so lots of milk (which has also been proven to help with weight loss) and a calcium supplement could help.

if you have to have a big meal, make the biggest breakfast.

eat lots of small healthy meals throughout the day. this helps to keep your stomach small, increase your metabolism, and burn calories faster.

when eating protein, like meats, don't eat servings larger than the thickness and width of the palm of your hand. people don't actually need more than 3 of those servings of protein a day.

if you need snacks between meals, eat something healthy like grapes or apple slices. if you visit fast food chains a lot, like burger king or mcdonalds, they both have very large salad options on their menus, as well as packaged apple slices. salads with cheese, a little dressing (thats where the calories are in salads), with some grilled chicken can make for a delicious meal, also very good for you if dark greens like spinach are used.

if you read on the back of most foods, it says "based on a 2000 calorie diet" i'm not the healthiest person around (certainly not the healthiest eating dancer), and i don't even intake 2000 calories a day.
i'm 5' 9" and weigh 127lbs. the last time i counted i took in about 1200 cal. and i'm actually under the recommended weight for my height.

most people have a general idea about what is healthy, but just don't eat those things. if you are truly eating non greasy/fatty foods and are not eating loads of sugars, and eating the proper serving size of each food, everything should be fine.

			QUESTION:
What would be a good healthy diet for someone with crohn's?
I have crohn's disease and it is hard for me to eat anything that has a lot of fiber in it, like steamed vegetables, raw vegetables, cereals, etc. So my diet mainly consists of carbs and meat. Along with this not so varitable diet and my treatments I am gaining a lot of weight. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can maintain a healthy diet and lose some weight without causing a flare up?

				ANSWER:
Most folks with crohn's find that a gluten free diet eliminates many symptoms. I know you feel like you don't want to cut out MORE foods, but I highly suggest you give a high saturated fat (especially from virgin coconut oil) diet a good trial. You might also want to try chia seeds, they are high fiber but the fiber is encased in a gel sack that makes it easier on the digestive system.

Nearly 6 years ago, I started Atkins low carb way of eating to just quit gaining weight. I had to get my out of control appetite under control. I never imagined I could LOSE weight without hunger or exercise, since I've become disabled. I never bothered weighing or measuring til I'd noticed that my clothes got huge quick. When my health improved dramatically also, I knew this was my new way of life and since it's eat all you want (of low carb foods) I know I can do this for life.

My personal carb level is low. I am older & disabled & don't move much (or cook much) but I eat all I want of meats, eggs, cheeses, yogurt, fats, green vegetables, almonds, berries, flax seeds, chia seeds, shirataki noodles and other foods. Someone active would have a MUCH higher carb level & can usually include all fruits, beans, whole grain products but not sugar & highly refined carbs in unlimited amounts. As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories.

Most overweight & obese people have blood sugar & insulin dysfunctions and can NEVER eat carbs as someone with a functioning body can. They make the mistake of going back to the way of eating that made them fat and that is not possible and yes they will gain all weight back if they eat what they ate that made them obese originally. Insanity is defined as doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way and expecting different results. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar & maintain weight or health.

You can lose more body fat eating protein & fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast, eat all you want, but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter & half an avocado a day (for added potassium). Keep the calories high & the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

The first 2 weeks eat several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce & celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers & more vegetables thereafter - add 5 grams per day additional every week (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) til you gain weight, then subtract 10grams. That will be your personal carb level (everyone is different & depends on how active you are.)

Start with meat, fats & salads for 2 weeks and then slowly add in more green veg, wk4 fresh cheeses, wk5 nuts & seeds, wk6 berries, wk7 legumes, wk8 other fruits, wk9 starchy veg, wk10 whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

The body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow metabolism to compensate & store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering calories, it will continue lowering the set point, til it can survive off nothing & store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of nutritious food.

Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) & exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of Atkins program is converting the body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). Dietary fat levels need to be at >65% of total calories, if not, the body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert a body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis). People feel sluggish the first week but most feel better than ever thereafter.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) trigger insulin, the only fat storage hormone. Protein releases the fat burning hormone glucagon.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger & unbalance other hormones. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

Hi,
Why do you need a healthy diet and what benifets come with one?

				ANSWER:
A healthy diet is important for so many reasons. First of all, it can help delay the aging process. It can help keep us physically and mentally active well into our senior years. It can prevent cancer and diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It can help our eliminatory efficiency. It can give us more energy and help prevent fatigue. It can help grow healthy nails and skin and hair. It can help the healing process. It can improve our immune response and on and on it goes.

What diet plan have you had the most success with? Weight Watchers, The Biggest Loser diet, etc, plain old healthy eating in moderation, etc?

What worked the best for you, and why?

				ANSWER:
Diets don't work they are to hard to stick to. IF you truly want to lose weight and keep it off for good there are a few things you have to do. Portion control, eat what a TRUE serving is!!!! Eat about six small meals instead of three large ones, Eat more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Cut down on your protein we as Americans eat more than our bodies truly need any way. And exercise even if you just add 15 minutes a day walking into your day you will start to lose weight, if you do all of the other things also. You don't have to stop eating what you like, You just have to eat it in the correct portions rather than what we've gotten used to. IF you do this you will lose weight, maybe not as fast as you would like but you will lose weight and you will keep it off. The faster that you lose weight usually the faster that you gain it back again. We need to eat more like our parents did and less like the media would want us to.

			QUESTION:
What will happen after I have done the Atkins Diet and go back to a normal, healthy diet?
I am going to do the induction phase of the atkins diet (2 weeks) to kick start my weight loss - however, can anyone tell me what will happen when I return to a healthy, low fat diet afterwards? I don't want to put any weight loss back on again.

I KNOW the best way is to exercise and eat a healthy diet from the outset, but the above is an option I am considering, I'd appreciate it if anyone who has done similar can tell me of their experiences.

I have done this exact thing, and as long as you do not over eat you will not put weight back on like they say. I went on atkins to take off a few pounds fast. I lost 7lbs in 2 weeks, and then I went on a 1,300 calorie/day diet. I did not gain weight, I continued to lose weight. However, I used this http://ifinallydidit.wordpress.com/ to help suppress my appetite so that I wouldn't over eat, because I had a bad habit of doing that. I'm trying to establish a healthy diet to follow. I don't want to follow any fancy plan but I want to make sure it's balanced. What is a good ratio for carbs and protein in a diet? Right now for every protein I eat I seem to eat 2 carbs.

				ANSWER:
This is a complex topic. Please read "Eat More, Weigh Less" by Dr. Dean Ornish. Go to the library and borrow the book.

My personal choice is to avoid junk food and eat raw whole foods as much as possible. That means leafy green vegetables, other vegetables, fruits, sprouted beans, brown rice, and whole grains. Eat some vegetarian sources of oil (these are required), but don't over do it. You do not need to eat dairy or meat for a healthy diet if you eat a balanced vegetarian diet. If you do eat them, do it in limited quantities.

Most degenerative diseases are from over consumption of protein and fat rich foods. Avoid convenience and packaged foods because they contain excitotoxins, colorings, preservatives, and other additives that may or may not have been tested. MSG and aspartame should be avoided.

In July 26, 2006, Science Daily published an article that says, aThe most effective diet for weight loss and cardiovascular health is based on a high carbohydrate from low glycemic index or GI foods.a The statement came from the researchers of University of Sydney.

In a first 12-week long, paralleled, randomized, and controlled trial of a low glycemic meal plan, it seeks to compare relative effects on weight loss and cardiovascular risk of a low glycemic meal plan and high-protein meal plans. The trial was spearheaded by Professor Jennie Brand-Millers and Joanne McMilla-Price from the University of Sydney Human Nutrition Unit. They discovered that there is no meal plan that fits all people. Nevertheless, diets that are low on GI carbohydrate significantly lower the risk of heart disease.

The trial composed of 129 overweight or obese young adults with the ages between 18 and 40. They were randomly given one of four reduced calorie or reduced fat meal plans for 12 weeks. Participants on the high-protein diet/high GI diet also had significant weight loss just like the high carbohydrate-low glycemic diet. When it comes to their cholesterol level, both types of eating plan had impacts as the high-protein/high GI diet increased the LDL level or bad cholesterol level of the participants while the low GI diet reduced the LDL cholesterol.

				ANSWER:
changing your diet to only healthy foods is the best thing you can do and will ensure you will lose weight if combine with walking everyday especially.

you can eat how much you like if you stay within these 3 guidelines and still lose fat naturally and gradually. You should lose 10lbs each month on average.

1.eat only steamed lean meats, eggs, healthy fruits ,vegetables, nuts, grains (Asian basmati or jasmine rice gives lots of energy and can be found at your local oriental/asian market or some super markets), & yogurt..2. drink only water, juice, & milk..3. walk or do some physical exercise 1-3 hour every day.

(btw, recommend you also to buy an electronic food steamer and a rice cooker ((Both Very cheap)) .which, used together make it very easy to prepare very nutritional, healthy meals ,,add a bit of olive oil , diced garlic, pepper, sliced lemon and spices on top of steamed vegeatables, fish or chicken to add more taste if wish as these are healthy too.)

they reap havoc on the endocrine system; the function in our body which regulates everything from body temperature to hair growth to hormones & skin condition. & will most certainly not create an ideal environment in which a baby may survive. eat healthy & get moderate exercise. you can start by walking 30 min/day & you will be doing a world of good for yourself & your baby.

			QUESTION:
What diet should i take to regain the lost nutrients after semen ejaculation ?
I am 28 years Old . I 've been having sex regularly(2-3 times a week) since last 12 years ...
After ejaculation my body (espically legs) start feeling weak . Please tell me what diet should i take to regain the lost energy quickly so that i can have sex 2-3 times in a day without any sign of weakness. In other words kindly tell me how to regain the nutrients quickly that were lost after semen ejaculation by eating good (vegetarian) diet ?

				ANSWER:
Your legs being shaky after sex is from muscle fatigue. The muscles aren't used to working as long and as much as you forced them to do during sex -or- your body is still recovering from the general exertion of having sex.

It has nothing to do with nutrients or the fact that you ejaculated.

To reduce the chance of this occurring, you need to get more exercise and build up your stamina for physical exertion.

Note that this is not going to let you have sex more often, that's completely different than having muscle fatigue. How often you can have sex in a day is related to how fast your body recovers from having sex and how aroused you can become after having had sex.

You may want to switch off of a vegetarian diet and see if that helps. Vegetarian diets do not provide all the things that a person needs, though it can come close.

			QUESTION:
How important is the diet when it comes to a workout plan?
I read these magazines that have these excellent workout plans. I do the workouts, but I don't do the crazy diet that they show with it. I don't eat a lot of egg whites and things like that, but I do make sure I eat healthy and drink protein shakes like "Muscle Milk". Is it important to follow the diet plan that they have in these magazines? I mean, prisoners don't follow a series diet plan and they come out pretty ripped.

				ANSWER:
Well me being a competitive bodybuilder, me and my friends at the gym always acknowledge diet as the most important aspect to bodybuilding. If you don't eat properly then you wont get the results you want; for example if you are wanting to get ripped than you need to cut back on the calories and increase your protein intake. If you want to add mass then you need to increase your caloric intake and eat plenty of carbs. Remember weather your a bodybuilder or not, you are what you eat, and if you don't diet properly then you wont get the results that you are looking for in the gym.

			QUESTION:
Can Diet pills risk your chances of ever becoming pregnant?
I Am about to start taking diet pills after trying to diet for the last 2 years and being unsuccessful. Would taking diet pills decrease my chances of ever becoming a mam? If so I will NOT take the pills.

Also I am on antibiotics: Flucloxacillin and If I do take these diet pills, will the antibiots stop the diet pills working?

Thank you.

				ANSWER:
Diet pills are associated with heart or organ damage. Not associated with infertility. Antibiotics generally have no effect on diet pills.

My suggestion is to get a medical workup as well as a COMPLETE log of what you eat over two weeks (that includes measuring your portions). Determine if you have a medical problem or not. I had a terrible time trying to lose weight, so I get it.

Also, try following something closer to a low carb diet. Eliminating or severely reducing starchy foods (such as potatoes, rice and pasta) and flour products really does make a difference over time. Most lower calorie foods simply replace the fat with sugar, which doesn't help.

			QUESTION:
Does a low carb diet lower the amount of good bacteria in your gut?
If I go on a low carb diet, will it lower the amount of good bacteria in my gut?

Also, if I take probiotics, will they be able to be sustained in my gut on a low carb diet or will the probiotics be ineffective in providing benefits if I am on a low carb diet?

Thanks.

				ANSWER:
No, a "low carb" diet will not ruin the good bacteria in your gut unless you're eating way too much cheese. The probiotics would be a good idea too. Also, "low carb" diets are not a good idea. Better to eat plenty of unrefined carbs like fruits and veggies for fiber. If you're eating just protein or fat it's not good for the kidneys, esp. long term. Dr. Atkins, who popularized the low carb diets died of a heart attack after all.

If you are really looking the best way to diet,
QUESTION:
What is a good diet for someone without a gall bladder who is trying to lose weight?
I eat healthy, exercise but it seems that no matter what I try I don't seem to be losing weight. People keep telling me to eat a low fat diet but the doctor told me that eating low fat is what killed my gall bladder. He said that everything in moderation. However it seems that if I eat too much protein I get sick, if I eat low fat I get sick. I am so confused until I am on the verge of just giving up. I try to balance it out but I don't seem to lose a pound. Can someone help? I need realistic help. I have a very understanding family but I don't want to make them suffer with special diet. I can prepare two meals for dinner if need be but it would be easier to just prepare one. Any suggestions? I am also looking for something long term. More like a life change as apposed to a diet.

			QUESTION:
Does the cabbage soup diet actually work? How much weight have people lost on this diet?
I've tried this diet before, only I ended up giving in after only a few days! But was wondering what people's experiences of doing this diet are? Is it worth me trying again? I have about 7 pounds to lose in a week!

				ANSWER:
Baby.. Crash diets are the surest way of not doing Weight Reduction procedures. Skipping meals and living on Cabbage Soup deprives your body of a whole lot of vital macro and micro nutrients.. It is not beneficial in the long run to indulge in such unscientific methods (pl don't mind the pun..)

You have not given any statistics on your height / weight.. Going by your measure of 7 pounds to lose per week..

It has been calculated that 1 pound of body fat is equal to 3500 calories. This means that in order to lose 1 pound we have to walk for about 12.5 hours. So don't expect fast weight loss and remember to eat sensibly.

Just like you don't eat once a week and stock up for the whole week's body requirements, exercising once a week is also a non-starter (no benefit). To get tangible benefits out of your exercise regimen, you must sweat it out vigorously at least 5 times a week for 30-45 minutes sessions each.

Eating vegetables (more importantly, shunning non-veg - as they have more calories per unit weight) is only one step in the weight reduction process.

Diet, Supplementation, Exercise, Positive Mental Attitude - all these are required for a decent weight loss program. Patience and persistence are also very critical virtues in your endeavour.

You must try Amway's Positrim Healthy Living Weight Management Program to reduce weight systematically without starving your body of essential nutrients. you may get in touch with me for your requirements and i can guide you on how to buy them..

Good luck.

			QUESTION:
What is the best diet plan to follow for weight loss?
I need to lose 20 pounds by summer and I need a easy diet plan to follow. I work 2 jobs and don't have a lot of time to prep food. I'd like a diet plan that uses minimal processed foods and doesn't take a long time to prepare. Has anyone found a diet plan that works for them? I will be incorporating some exercise as well, but I have a knee injury that prevents me from doing anything with much impact.

				ANSWER:
Look like your are very busy, but why not just Power walk 45 mins daily, but you have to walk faster, like jogging to burn FAT. And you can buy some apple, orange , can of tuna (in water), instant oatmeal (120 cal per bag), 2 boxes of eggs (hard boil), zero yogurt etc. they dont need too much time to prepare, you can hard boil 12 eggs for 2 -3 days, oatmeal, you just need add hot water for it. try to keep your cal within 1200-1400 cals, and power walk for 45 mins daily, you will lose 1 lb weekly or more. but you have to walk faster not shopping speed. 45 mins is about 5-6KM. Take care !

			QUESTION:
What is the best diet for a cockatoo who will not each fresh fruit or veggies?
When I rescued my bird, the previous owner said that he would eat only peanuts, coffee and toast!!! Fortunately, a vet check-up deemed him in great shape despite the poor diet and smokey environment where he lived. My vet demands that the cockatoo be switched to a 100% pellet diet using HARRISON'S commercial pellets. Everything I read prescribes a varied diet to include mixed seeds and fresh food along with pellets. He delights in eating nuts from the shell including walnuts, hazel nuts, pecans and Brazil nuts. I am offering 2/3 pellets and 1/3 seed mixture and most of it is eaten (or on the floor of the cage) each day. My bird delights in drinking cranberry juice and apple juice from a cup while I have my coffee which I know is a poison for birds. He throws all fresh food out of his cup but will take cooked meat and whipped cream if I feed it by hand. I would love to hear from other cockatoo owners about their success with food for their bird.

				ANSWER:
i have a cockatoo....with a similar problem. i brought her home as a foster care for a bird rehabilitation center (that's where i got so into birds).the center took her and her family from a abusive and lazy owner.she would beat her dogs and cats and birds, let the cats out free with the birds, and so on and so on.they tried to keep up with her mother and her sister but her mother died form cancer and lack of nutrition. her sister was in a foster care too, but she died two weeks after the foster care took her in. the center had so many birds and did not have the time to take care of a 2 week old cockatoo. so i took her in. i hand fed her, and spoiled her and took her to the pet store with me for her to pick out her own toys (when she was strong and old enough of course). and so i adopted her and when she was weened off her formula and hooked on a pellet/seed mix i started her with veggies. she just wouldn't eat them, id chop em up real small but she still found them. so what i did(i know its cheating) is i took her old baby syringe and blended up her veggies and fruits and gave it too her like i did her formula. soon it was regular, and i decided to ween her from the veggie smoothie, so i mixed in her veggies with the smoothie and i started to add more whole fruit and less smoothie and now she eats veggies regularly!

i hope this can help.... and i hope this wasn't too long!

			QUESTION:
How long do diet shakes take with replacing 1 meal a day to start losing and noticing changes?
If i was to replace 1 meal a day, say lunch, for a shake, how long would it take for me to lose weight? And also i want to go on a diet, im really good with exercise, i exercise everyday but im a very fussy eater therefor i don't like much. How am i supposed to eat healthy then if i don't like the diet foods advertisers tell you to eat?

				ANSWER:
Some diet shakes are real garbage drinks. They often contain cheap ingredients such as casein (milk protein) or aspartame (a neurotoxin). Counting and reducing calorie intake has been proven to be ineffective over a two year period of time in one scientific study after another. The most popular diets fail time after a period of two years without fail. Most participants end up putting on more weight than they lose.

The only effective way to lose weight in the long run is to change your lifestyle. If you can maintain a low-fat vegan diet you have a chance at permanent weight loss. It also helps to maintain an aerobic exercise program and a free weight exercise training program.

You see, it takes 7 times as many calories to add a pound of muscle than it does a pound of fat. Would you rather gain 7 pounds of fat or 1 pound of sculpting muscle? The muscles cells also burn calories, even when you are resting.

			QUESTION:
What effect does diet have on lower belly fat and love handles?
Hi, I know that spot reduction is near impossible and the way to make lower belly fat go away is to diet and exercise to lower your bodies overall body fat. Does diet factor into losing lower belly fat? Seem to me that it shouldn't. How can some foods biochemically affect only the belly fat. I have a degree in biology so please try to explain in a way that follows scientific logic, thanks

				ANSWER:
When losing belly fat and love handles, 20% comes from exercise, and 80% comes from diet. You basically need to get your body into a form of ketosis which comes entirely from diet. You prevent glucose consumption, and your brain requires glucose to survive, so your body enters a state of ketosis which takes your fat (in this case your belly fat and love handles), and turns them into ketone bodies and a glucose substitute for your brain. Your body uses these ketone bodies which came from your fat for energy. 20% is from exercise because you need to remind your body that it needs the energy from your fat, plus when you exercise you use up any few calories of glucose you ingested making sure that your body uses your fat stores. When your belly fat and love handles are gone (basically you have like 7% body fat) you must incorporate glucose foods into your diet (but gradually and in small portions otherwise you damage your health). If the fat is still there keep going until its all gone. It's that simple.

			QUESTION:
What are the benefits of a gluten free diet?
This question is for people who have ever tried the gluten free diet or considering a gluten-free diet. Have you felt different ever since you started the gluten free diet? What does it prevent tell me all the benefits. Also if i do a gluten free diet what can and cannot eat. Please give me gluten free diet cons and pros, Thank you for answering my question.

				ANSWER:
I started a low-gluten/gluten free diet when I got serious about my fitness.

I feel lighter after meals and more able to exercise. Plus my muscle/fat ratio is continually improving. Many people are intolerant to some extent without realising it and many digestive issues can be solved by butting gluten out of the diet.

Plus, while a gluten-restrictive diet is not necessarily calorie restricted, the fact that more of your calories come from protein and the fact many snacks are off-limits often translates to a lower-calorie diet, which has obvious benefits for weight loss.

I wouldn't personally recommend Atkins as a diet plan. I understand using it to lose weight in the short term but I think the macro-nutrient profile of the diet is less than beneficial in the long term. As an alternative I would recommend looking at the Paleo or Primal diet. It's based around fruits, lean meats, root vegetables and so forth. I've been doing that but including dairy products and have seen great results.

Stuff that contains gluten includes bread, pasta, rice and most empty/bulk carbs. After a while, you'll get used to checking food labels to see if stuff is gluten free.

Good luck!

			QUESTION:
What's the best diet you tried that yielded you the greatest results and didn't make you crazy?
I need to lose some weight-- about 40-50 pounds. I am intelligent and know that decreasing caloric intake and increasing my activity level will do that, but its so hard to stick to a diet when everyone else in the family isn't dieting.

Any tricks or tips that I'm not aware of? Or do I have to just commit to Weight Watchers or another plan and also put my family on a diet as well?

				ANSWER:
the best one i can recommend is not actually a diet as you dont restricts your self from foods

just dont eat as much carbs drink lots and lots of water eat five small healthy meals a day eat plenty of fruit and veg and try not to snack on crisps and ice cream

do a 1 hr jog a day if you can and also try to fit in some muscle building exercise

and try to get the whole family to do it so your not alone

good luck x

also for dinner always have something steamed cooked

Childhood obesity has become a major health epidemic, with approximately 15% of children considered to be obese the world over. The main reason for the childhood obesity epidemic is a shift in eating habits, away from fresh food, whole grains and vegetables to convenience food high in fat, sugar and additives. Another major factor is a decline in activity for both children and adults, who now spend more time in sedentary activities l 00004000 ike watching TV and playing computer games that participating in exercise.

In addition, children who have obese or overweight parents have a high risk of becoming obese themselves as a result of poor family eating habits and unhealthy food choices. Parents today are spending less time with their kids and giving less parental advice about healthy food and activity choices. In the USA, UK and Australia 25% of children are considered overweight or obese. The health risks associated with obesity in childhood are great including low self esteem, depression, hormonal imbalances, diabetes and joint problems.

Worse still, the obese child who remains overweight into adulthood has the potential to develop more serious health risks later in their life, including arthritis, stroke and heart attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, and bowel cancer.

Fast food marketing giants spending billions of dollars in advertising to target children and teens, selling them cheap and high-calorie low nutrition value foods, such as crisps, soft drink, hamburgers and confectionery, coupled with lack of control of parents, is the major cause of incorrect eating habits and obesity.
If you've tried diets to lose weight fast and just cannot lose fat very fast, don't worry. This is very common. 95% of people can't lose fat permanently. The good news is, you're not to blame. The most likely reason you cannot lose weight quickly is that you are going about it the wrong way by buying a diet or weight loss product. The people that make money selling weight loss products aren't going to be happy I told you this, but here's the honest truth: Not ONE weight loss products has been proven to be effective on a permanrnt basis for fast weight loss. When you see a sales pitch to lose your belly or body fat fast, the pitch is basically this: All you have to do is give us some money and we will give your something amazing that will quickly get rid of all your belly or body fat for you. However, there one thing wrong with that.

Millions of people blowing through billions of dollars have proven diet and weight loss products don't work for fast fat loss. Don't believe me? Go the beach and look around. How many thin people do you see?

Why can't diet products work for fast fat loss? It's because they are either a total scam: Pill, herb, tea, patch, etc.- or a temporary fix -liposuction, diet plan, diet foods, etc. Naturally, it's impossible for the scams to work since they don't do anything. Now what's the reason "real" diet products cannot help you lose weight fast?If you're ready, here's the real story you'll never get from people that sell diets to lose weight fast.

When you are trying to lose weight without proper supervision as most people do, you end up having poor nutrition. The downside of having poor nutrition is that sometimes instead of losing weight, you gain more, have mood swings, and become highly stressed. Before you get on a diet, you should at least know the importance of dieting and why it should be healthy.

Better physical shape and live healthy

For obvious reasons, it should be healthy so that you will be in good physical shape as well. If you get very careful about your intake of sugars, salt and fat, and start including plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and a lot more healthy foods in your diet, you will definitely have better health. You will also be granted a stronger immune system, fewer mood swings, and reduced stress caused by illnesses or poor overall health.

More energy

Having a healthy diet can also give you more energy, which is very useful with how fast everything is going nowadays. Changing diets may seem tough for most people, but overtime, when you start seeing the positive results, everything would seem so easy. When you are maintaining the proper diet, you can save a lot, not just financially, but also in terms of your physical condition. You can save more money since the more you take care of yourself, the less medical bills you have to pay.

What is the meaning of "proper dieting"?

A lot of people do not even know what proper dieting means anymore. When you mention the word "diet", they just think about losing weight and all the other diet plans out there. Most people neglect the fact that diet actually means having a nutritional meal plan everyday.

Healthy eating habits

The best diet a person can have is one that is well-balanced, meaning you have to have good servings of food from the main food groups, a lot of water, and a very limited consumption of junk foods that are high in salt, sugar and saturated fats. Sounds simple, right? Changing your eating habits may mean no more pizza or Chinese food every night, or gorging when you are over at your friends' houses. It's nice to indulge in these simple pleasures every now and then, but when you start to do it all the time, your health has nowhere to go but down.

People, especially the young ones, think that they don't need to watch what they are eating because they feel healthy. They are not willing to give up their bad eating habits. Only when they no longer feel healthy will they start going around looking for fast remedies.

Enough Exercise

Dieting is something that every individual should take seriously. Every person has different speed of metabolism, eating preferences, and activity levels. When you diet, you have to seek out healthy living. Healthy living also includes getting enough exercise. So if you want to be in your best shape ever, get on the right track and start today.

The world 00004000 of dieting and diets is full of some really strange and wacky ideas! It seems that almost every month some celebrity or another is coming out endorsing yet another spin on the diet theme! Well, I'm no celebrity, but here is one you might not expect - The Chocolate Diet!

I can almost see you falling off your chair in fits of giggles - here comes another of those wacky fad diets from yet another self-proclaimed expert! I'm always very aware of that old definition of an "expert" - "X" is an unknown quantity, and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure!

The Chocolate Diet? Haven't we've been told since we were young that chocolate is BAD for us - a moment on the lips, a life time on the hips! Certainly, if you are talking about highly refined milk chocolate then I would agree with you. But, what if we were talking about something very different?

We might be in need of a quick history lesson. Hernan Cortes was the Conquistador who led the "conquest" of the Aztecs. Writing in 1519 he observed:

"The divine drink builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this precious drink permits a man to walk for a whole day without food"!

And the drink he was talking about was .... Chocolate! Remember, he was a soldier not known for making rash, unsubstantiated, judgments. Clearly, something is going on here that we need to pay attention to.

But before you go rushing off to the local supermarket, and hit the sweet counters, this is not any old chocolate we are talking about! Certainly, it is not your average confectionery chocolate. What if we were talking about one of the most natural and nutritious foods known to humanity - the original Healthy Dark Chocolate?

You desperately want to lose weight, but somehow, your stomach's always rumbling. And when it rumbles, you eat. And eat. And eat.

Guess what? You're not alone! It's the problem every conscientious dieter faces trying to lose weight. And what's more, it's the one weight loss problem that's so easily solved. You can feel full faster by eating less - if you use the following 5 diet tips I'm going to give you.

Hunger-Buster #1: Use a small plate.

Yes - it's that simple, but that effective. We all remember Mom looking at our loaded plates and saying, "Eyes bigger than your tummy, honey." Well, a big plate that's got very little food on it looks empty - giving your eyes the impression that you haven't eaten enough. That makes your next step inevitable...nibble, nibble, nibble all evening.

But with a smaller plate, that same size potion fills it nicely, and voila! You've tricked your eyes (and your stomach) into thinking you've eaten enough. Which really you have.

Hunger-Buster #2: Start with soup.

It's a delicious, low calorie, but most importantly, filling way to stat your meal. There's only that much room in your stomach, and soup takes care of an awful lot of it. In plain English, this means (and research has this proven) that you'll eat a smaller meal and less cals throughout the day.

Hunger-Buster #3: Chew.

Yeah, God gave you teeth. Use them. No more of that gulp-chomp-swallow cycle. Eat slowly, chew thoroughly and savor each bite.

Any diet designed to reduce or eliminate an overgrowth of yeast must restrict sugar. Sugar is what keeps this organism alive. When it doesn't have access to sugar it basically starves and dies. Restricting these foods goes beyond avoiding foods that contain sugar. There are many foods, namely simple carbohydrates like pastries, which convert to sugar after they are consumed. As a note of caution, you should not follow an anti-yeast infection diet without first consulting with your doctor. Once you are cleared to continue the diet, you should follow the steps to slowly progress through the diet.

It is a good idea to start the diet very aggressive and slowly taper off. The aggressive step helps to detoxify your system quickly. This step should last for a couple of weeks. Your symptoms should start to subside and you should feel an improvement in your well-being. You should then start introducing some of the avoided foods back into your diet. Introduce foods slowly so that you can detect if certain foods are causing you a problem. Once you've successfully introduced these foods into your diet, you should then focus on stabilizing your diet. A recommended approach to keep yeast infections at bay is to follow a diet that includes mostly vegetables, modest amounts of protein, and very little carbohydrates.

			QUESTION:
What are your best diet tips? workouts? and suggestions for a fast way to loose 10lbs?
thanks so much!
please let me kno what works for you/ what you've heard works!

				ANSWER:
When you are losing weight, you should exercise and diet together.
If you exercise without dieting, you will get bigger appetite, which
will lead to increase of weight, or muscle grow
underneath the fat layer, and make you bulkier. If you diet without
exercising, you will become flabby and will have excess skin. For
diet, go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food
after 7 p.m. People achieve marvellous results with it. Depending on
your initial weight, you can drop upwards from 20 pounds a month. If
you don't eat wheat then you don't eat all those sticky, fatty goey
cakes, you don't eat junk food, and you don't eat biscuits. But your
diet is still balanced. It costs nothing, and you do not have to
calculate points or to buy special meals or plans. For exercising,
start with walking, and then switch to running/jogging. Running is the
most efficient and calorie-burn exercise ever. If you are overweight a
lot, walk first or you may have health complications (heart attack,
disjointed bones and so on). Weight lifting is a good means to target
your problem areas for men and women. It's not necessarily to become a
bodybuilder or even join a gym - a couple of dumbbells will help you
to target your problem areas (stomach, butt, legs, arms, chest).

			QUESTION:
I need help losing weight. What are your BEST diet tips?
Anything would help me at this point. Exercises, eating habits, diet programs. I'm not fat, but I would like to be skinnier.
I've struggled with eating disorders, and I'm trying to kick that and lose weight in a healthy way.

				ANSWER:
Water
black coffee (boosts metabolism)
no white bread, white rice or flour pasta
no alcohol
EAT BREAKFAST!!
DO NOT graze (i.e. snacking frequently)
sit down to eat--make it a real meal with time set aside. you'll eat slower, eat less, have time to make better food choices and enjoy your food more.

easiest and MOST important:
Write a food journal!
Use any notebook (better a small one so you can keep it with you and write things down all day) and write down EVERYthing that you eat how much. If you want to be really gung ho, you can add the calories and keep track with numbers but I find that maddening.
Just write down everything, including drinks. This will help you take a realistic inventory of what you're eating and when. Also write down what you're feeling when you eat, if you're an emotional eater. I promise this is immensely helpful. It really helps you stay on track, be focused and it doesn't allow you to cheat.
Which reminds me, don't starve yourself or deny yourself something you really want. Just go easy on the portions.
Craving chocolate cake? Take two or three (seriously) chocolate chips and put them in your mouth. Don't chew. Don't swallow. Just savor them til they're gone. You will be amazed at how satisfied your craving is by really tasting your food. And if you're really hungry, eat a small meal (meats, whole grain and veg) and then have a little candy to savor.

Good luck and kudos for wanting to do it the healthy way!

I'm trying to lose weight, and would love to know YOUR best diet tips! Thanks.

				ANSWER:
1.) Eat Breakfast
2.) Not everything that is fat-free is good for you
3.) 30 minutes of exercise does wonders
4.) Alternate cardio one day and weights the next
5.) Alcohol can eliminate a weeks worth of exercise because it can stop the muscles from growing.
6.) It's matters what you eat not when you eat. McDonalds at noon is just as bad as McDonalds at midnight.
7.) Protein should be no bigger than the palm of your hand
8.) Carbs should be no bigger than your fist.
9.) Veggies should comprise 50% of a meal.
10.) Not eating lowers your metabolism.
11.) You can have one really horrible, over the top meal, a week and it won't affect your diet. It actually helps it by making your body increase its metabolism.
12.) Running is actually very bad for your body. It can ruin your knees for the future. Best cardio is fast walking at an incline.
13.) if you do run, make sure to replace your shoes regularly. Not doing so can cause damage to your knees.
14.) Just because you're a woman doesn't mean you shouldn't use protein.
15.) Women have an extra layer of fat under their skin. This layer makes it harder for women to show definition.
16.) You can lose inchs and not lose any weight.
17.) Low fat or fat free chips are terrible for you. You can eat more in one sitting than a regular bag of chips. best chips for dieters are Sun-Chips.
18.) Fat makes you feel full and satiated. You have to have a little bit of it whether it is in lean meats, cottage cheese, or milk.
19.) Low-Fat milk helps people lose more weight... seriously.
20.) Avoid high-fructose corn syrup.
21.) Chew slow. It helps trigger the "full" signal.
22.) Drinks lots of water.
23.) Green tea is not only good to drink it helps increase your metabolism.. despite what the FDA might say.
24.) Buffalo is a great meat. High protein. Low fat.
25.) If you think you have a lot of "water weight" drink water. It sounds dumb, but drinking more water helps to eliminate the water you're holding.
26.) Best to weigh yourself in the morning.
27.) Only weigh yourself once a week. Weighing yourself everday can make you feel depressed and it can ruin your diet.
28.) Losing 1-2 pounds a week is ideal.
29.) Strart an exercise routine before starting a diet routine. If you can keep your exercise routine for a month start to diet.
30.) You can't go from eating 3000 calories a day to only eating 1800 calories. Slowly take away calories as you lose weight. Maybe take away 100-150 calories per week to ease yourself into your new diet plan.
31.) Do not eat and watch TV. You'll eat more.
32.) If you're going to have chips or popcorn while watching TV, measure out a serving and put it in a bowl. Leave the bag behind. You'll eat less.
33.) if you plateau, mix up your exercise routine. Your body probably got used to it.
34.) According to a radio diet show, a Venti Frappuchino is the equivalent to drinking an entire birthday cake. It's healthier to have a big mac because that at least has no sugar and is loaded with protein.
35.) Men's health said the best fast food breakfast is from McDonalds. Get a ham & egg mcmuffin but remove the top bun.

Add more fruits instead of junk food, The water in them will fill you up more, Try and join a gym or youth program at a local ymca. If you don't feel like you need to lose weight then don't, But don't do it for family, friends, boys ect. It will only cause you self esteem issues down the road because your self worth will be determined on what others think and not yourself. Find it within your self. You are beautiful and don't let anyone tell you different just because you don't weight what they want you to. Your 13 your body is going to gain weight a little easier because you need extra fat right now because your reproductive system is trying to develop, among other things. QUESTION:
Any ideas on the best diet tips? Please only respond if you personally have tried the diets you mention?

				ANSWER:
I have never been on a diet and I have never been fat. The food that I eat is pretty much the way of the South Beach Diet. I avoid putting on weight by eating a lot of seafood, snacking on fruits and veggies instead of candy and junk, and the biggest thing of all is I AVOID PROCESSED FOOD whenever I can! I use real butter instead of margarine, cook everything with olive oil instead of vegetable oil, buy whole grain bread (or wheat). I never starve myself and I eat as much as I feel like any time I want. I just choose to eat healthy food.

Snack ideas:
Apples with peanut butter
String cheese
Bread (carbs are not bad for you!!)
Oranges
Frozen fruit (I buy in bulk, mix together, and carry in tupperware)
Make your own Fruit-n-Yogurt parfaits: Add vanilla fat-free yogurt on top of some frozen strawberries and some granola cereal on top. Healthy and tasty.

Those are just a few ideas, but be more conscious of what you put in your body. As you begin to eat healthier foods, you will notice that your cravings for junk pretty much go away.

Another thing is that I don't eat a lot of meat. I think that really helps a lot. You rarely ever see a fat vegetarian.

			QUESTION:
what are the best diet tips?
i need to lose weight within 4 months. Any tips?

				ANSWER:
don't skip meals
eat every 3-4 hours
drink plenty of water 2-3 litre a day, avoid caffeine and sugar drinks (even 100% fruit juice as it cuts out the nutrients from the hard bits of the fruit)
2 serves of fruit, 4-6 serves of veg per day
skim milk, whole grain bread
avoid processed, high salt and high fat foods (e.g. take out)
exercise for at least 30 minutes a day (need to break a sweat)
don't keep unhealthy foods in the house, they are too tempting and if you are really hungry you are more likely to go for them
put your fork down in between bites, chew your food completely, take sips of water between bites that way you will realize you are full before you eat your entire meal
don't eat a whole meal from a restaurant, they are larger servings than you would have at home, try ordering an entree size

				ANSWER:
Hi there, if losing some pounds of any description is what you want then I used a great website and coach who helped me. They were very friendly and gave me lots of great advice. I needed to lose 40 pounds and I did so fairly easily. The website is www.myhealthabc.com once you fill in your details then you can see the full range of products they have. You will need their help though as there is so much to choose from. The products really work and you feel great whilst losing weight, its all nutrition based.
I lost all my weight in less than three months and they have helped me to keep it off. I would definitely recommend using them, the tips you get and encouragement are excellent (their advice and time is FREE). I am still with them so I stay healthy. If you just want to buy the products and not use the coaching then you can do that aswell, there is a link in there to email them so you can tell them you just want to buy and not speak to anyone. The owners will even advise you via email on what to purchase depending on what you want to lose, my sister did it this way (she was more self conscious than me) and lost 76 pounds in less than five months. These guys are just great, try them

				ANSWER:
1. Eat about 6 small complete meals throughout the day (fish, almonds, walnuts, and lean proteins in general, plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, and complex multigrain carbohydrates) spaced out about every 2-3 hours. Consume between 1500-2500 calories a day.
2. Do NOT starve yourself, do NOT binge eat.
3. Be as active as you can; nothing to do for 10 minutes? Knockout 10 elevated push-ups.
4. Eat some spicy foods; take a decent amount of vitamin C, and drink between a half-gallon and a whole gallon of WATER a day.
5. No more soda. Ever.
6. If you do drink coffee, drink it black.
7. Do at least 35 minutes of cardio straight at least once a day, at least three times a week, more if you are not trying to put on muscle.
8. Do a large amount of full body exercises whenever possible (Jumping Jacks, Pull-ups, Chin ups, dips, squats, hanging leg raises, hanging knee raises, back raises, glute ham raises, burpees)
9. Get at least 6 hours of sleep a night, but no more then 9.
10. Avoid anything deep-fried, white bread, sprinkles, and any refined sugar.

				ANSWER:
I have lost 40 lbs. in 3 months and I know this will work. Eat small healthy meals every 2-3 hours, eat your last meal 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. Do not starve yourself or your body will go into survival mode where anything you eat will be turned into FAT. This will help you a lot but if you want more results you can exercise 3-4 days a week, include weight training and especially cardio (walking especially running). If you set your mind to lose the weight you will lose it and when you start seeing how good you look you'll want to keep going.
Good Luck

What is your best diet tips?

				ANSWER:
A vegan diet would be beneficial to you. Less preservatives, more nutrients. Meat should be outlawed. : ]
Before each meal, go on a 10 minute walk at a brisk pace. It will rev up your metabolism before the meal. Drink a lot of water and green tea, possibly even alternating.
Even if you don't go on a vegan diet, try going vegan just one night a week. It will expand your taste horizons and open your taste buds to different textures and flavors. Try starting out with quinoa.

Best work out and diet tips for gaing muscle.?
I'm planning on becoming a police officer and need to get in shape for the academy. Please give me advice and tips on how to do this. Please include work out plans, diets, and anything else that will help me gain muscle. I need upper, middle and body strength. THANK YOU!!!

				ANSWER:
Im not going to go into detail on specific exercises (cuz it would take up a whole page) But I would recommend working out your:
Chest-Monday
biceps and triceps-Tuesday
shoulders-wednesday
back-thursday
legs-friday

After 2 or three weeks, switch up your routine. Your muscles need 36 hours to repair themselves, so be sure not to over-train a specific area. Make sure you get adequate amounts of protein. Protein works best if taken from foods, but the powders are not bad. I use to eat about 4-6 egg whites, a bowl of oatmeal, and whole grain toast in the morning. for lunch I would have a couple cans of tuna, a couple boneless skinless chicken breast and maybe a salad. For dinner I would usually have something like a lean steak or spaghetti. I HAD to maintain at least 3400 calories to maintain my size.

Also, heavy weight with few reps builds muscle, while lighter weight with many reps tones muscle. For a more detailed workout plan, I would recommend checking out a website called bodybuilding.com. It has a lot of useful info.

				ANSWER:
being patient with yourself is key. If you decide on picking up that leftover piece of cake, or finish that half gallon of ice cream, forgive yourself. Don't dwell, just work it off!

Best diet is a low calorie, low-to-no fat diet. Incorperating lots of fruit and veggies. Making it a more of a lifestyle thing might be better too. Results would be long term instead of just a quick fix.

Motivation...The thing that worked best for me is getting angry. "I don't want to look the way I look! I wanna look better than this!" Get yourself angry to the point to where you wanna do something about it! Go for a bike ride, jogging or walking.

I'm not a professional. I'm just telling you what worked for me. everytime i go on the treadmill I get a mental picture that I'm running away from my old lazy self. So far I've lost 14 pounds doing that, so it's definately worked for me. If this doesn't help you, I apologize. Best of luck to you gettin' fit!

				ANSWER:
Focus on high protein, nutritious meals, like eggs, lean beef, turkey & chicken. Flavor with lots of spices and veggies. Low fat cheese is good to. Carbs are ok as long as you eat good carbs (stay away from chips, candy, etc.). Focus on whole grain breads, sweet pototaes (no fries). Studies have also shown that people who consume low fat dairy and milk on a regular basis are overall leaner than those who don't.
Fats are okay as long as they are low fat items. Your body still needs some fat to operate.
Start pumping the iron. Muscle take more energy (calories) to keep around.

			QUESTION:
how can i lose 2 stones in a year whats the best diet tips etc??

				ANSWER:
Don't target losing more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

			QUESTION:
best diet /weight loss tips for pcos sufferer?
i was diagnosed with pcos last year ,late last year, and since then have regular reviews/etc at my docs,am supposed to go back to the hospital to see the gyno, but was put off as she offered me no words of wisdom, other than your weight is caused by the syndrome, but you need to lose it,come back in 6mths.
Doc wasn't over the moon that she'd said this, but said it would be more of a case of advice and help to me on the diet side, and any other treatment/medicines for it eg the pcos.
Anyhow,i have seen a dietician at my docs, she said i am to watch everything i eat and in look at labels and follow it by 100gms ,so per 100gms i should not eat anything with more than 10gms sugar, and 5-8gms of fat. I have tried doing this a bit but have not really felt that it will help, also not sure what the best tip is with pcos to lose weight,i have read in some places, cut down on carbs, but then i'm sort of picking at things and end up bingeing on them again,i am aware about the connection with carbs and the blood sugar etc.

Anyone who is a health care professional that is able to advise,or anyone with good advice or similar situation, would like to hear from you. Thanks
ok,why did the dietician tell me to eat only high bran/wholemeal/wholegrain carbs, and watch the fat and sugar but not watch the calories, she said she would not go onto that at the moment.
Also i have been told that pcos does make it harder to lose weight,i have already lost half a stone god knows how,i am on cerazzette pill cause it doesn't contain oestrogen, and to help acne, and also am taking metformin 1, 3 times a day
could you give me some advice of how to find out about the diet that the 2nd answerer mentioned?? Vitaline?

				ANSWER:
1) Drink a glass of water before every meal. It fills you up so you don't over eat. Also drink a glass of cold water every morning - Your body burns calories by cooling down the water to make it useful to your body.

2) Eat slowly - It takes your brain 20 minutes to realize you're full, so if you eat fast, you'll overeat.

3) Never crash diet. Don't go under 1200 calories a day. It'll slow your metabolism down, and you won't be able to receive all the nutrients you need in a day. And once you do start eating normally again, you'll regain all the weight you lost immediately. Instead, take it slow and steady.

4) Don't be a lazy bum. Do jumping jacks while watching TV, run laps around the coffee table - Just try to keep yourself moving.

5) Immediately after eating, pop a piece of cinnamon or mint gum in your mouth so you don't feel the urge to keep picking at your food.

6) And don't beat yourself up if you had a bad day! Listen to your body - If you want something, have it! Just always remember to keep it in moderation. But don't deprive yourself, or you won't get ANYWHERE.

7) Leave a couple bites left on your plate when eating. You can save calories by not eating every last bite.

Substitute "diet" foods for regular foods - Skim milk for whole, low-fat cheese for full-fat cheese, light bread over regular bread, reduced calorie yogurt over regular yogurt, Splenda for sugar, etc.

			QUESTION:
What are the best diet tips?

				ANSWER:
Well,
I have recently dedicated myself to a gym.
I work out on a daily base, for about 1 hour 30 Min's.
I go for walks with my son, weather permitted.
I started to keep track of all the foods and drinks i was comsuing.
Portion your meals before you sit down, and take up to 20 Min's to eat. enjoy ever spoon full of your meals.
watch for calories and suggested serving sizes, they can be tricky:P
don't miss any meals, you get thin by being full.
Its also a good thing to eat every three hours. not like a huge roast or anything ha ha, but 10 almonds.. as long as you have something.
I lost 20 lbs doing this in just 2 weeks, I don't really understand 'stones' but im guessing that's the weighing measurements in england.
anyways best of luck to you.

ooh also,
drink half your body weight in OZ water daily,
IE: if you weigh 200 lbs, drink 100 oz of water.
cut out juices, sodas and limit milk to once a day, water is the best thing for us.
drink room tempature water and make sure you drink at least 250mL before every meal so you don't fill up just on the meals. a lot of times thirst is confused for hunger.

			QUESTION:
Best diet tips?
At the moment i'm trying to cut down on calories, so weird diet i've invented involves taking Metamucil (dietry fibre supplement) in the morning, which seems to fill me up, and apparently dietry fibre isn't really digested totally or something, and eating "cup of soups", which usually have between 260-360kj per serve (not sure how many calories this equates to). Plus a healthy meal at night.
I'm also drinking heaps of Diet Coke, Fanta etc, because the kj are so low and it seems to fill you up, is there any negative side to this?

aah...just forget about what all say...like " go on diet...." "eat less food" bla bla bla!!! just try out the world's best solution that is Eat more, lose more!!!

haha i am not joking..try this out!!

9 WAYS TO REDUCE WEIGHT WITHOUT EATING LESS

( ! ) Don't starve yourself.

Lowering your calorie intake will make your body reduce the rate at which it changes calories into energy. In other words, reducing calorie intake slows down your metabolism and holds onto your fat. Starving yourself will actually make it harder for you to lose weight. Food is fuel or energy and when you skip meals, you are not working on energy hat can be burned off. As a defense mechanism, your body clings to calories and slows down your weight loss.

(2) Get a breakfast boost.

Connie Dickman, a registered dietician and nutritionist advises not to skip breakfast. According to her, breakfast gives you energy so that you are not starving as the day go on. When you skip breakfast, you become so hungry that you eat more than you should or eat the wrong foods.

(3) Eat complex carbohydrates.

Practice eating complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are found in food such as candy, cereal, softdrinks and ice cream. They are easily absorbed by the body and they stick to the ribs, according to weight loss specialist Dr. Daisy Merey. Simple carbohydrates have a tendency to make you store more fat.

On the other hand, complex carbohydrates which are found in pastas, potatoes, beans, whole grains, vegetables and fruits contain "good" calories that are easily burned.. In switching from a meat-based diet to the one tat is starch-based, you get the same amount of food with only 25% of the calories, says John McDougall, M.D., Director of the McDougall Program at St. Helena Hospital.

Eat more fruits and vegetables, which are high in complex carbohydrates. You will eat more, but you will lose more, because the feeling of fullness will hinder you from eating high-fat foods that make you gain weight.

(4) Eat Fiber.

Kristine Clark, the Director of Sports Nutrition at Penn State University says that eating high-fiber foods can help people keep their weight under control. Because foods hat are rich in fiber help people to slow down their eating and foods that are high in fiber contain less fat and sugar.

According to Nutrition experts, one should eat 20 to 35 grams of dietary fiber a day. There are two kinds of fiber in foods. The soluble and the insoluble fibers. Soluble fibers are those that dissolve and thicken in water. Foods that contain soluble fibers include broccoli, zucchini, barley, oat bran, beans and citrus fruits.

Insoluble fibers include skins of fruits and vegetables and the external coatings of wheat kernel.

Fiber is an essential ingredient in one's diet because the insoluble form prevents constipation. Studies revealed that the soluble fibers play an important role in reducing cholesterol.

(5) Drink water.

Water helps the body break down fat and process waste according to Dr. Denise Bruner, a Virginia bariatrician, describing how water as part of her diet, helped her to shed 62 pounds. One should drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day.

(6) Exercise and be active in household work.

T o exercise is one of the best ways to maintain your weight down. Exercise helps you to burn calories. According to Franca Alphin, Nutrition Director at Duke University Diet and Fitness Center in North Carolina, "You can lose weight without exercising, but you won't maintain the weight loss." Exercise may not be a major player in weight loss, but it is the number one player in preventing weight gain," says Jack H. Gilmore, Ph. D.

Inactivity burns fewer calories each day, which are stored as fat. Daniel Kosich, Ph. D., the author of Get Real: A Personal Guide to Real-Life Weight Management and an advisor to Jane Fonda Workouts, says regular activity is a critical part of successful weight loss. It doesn't have to be a strenuous workout. You can burn calories just by doing ordinary chores such as gardening and housework. "Pushing a mop or vacuum across the floor increases your heart rate and creates resistance ," says Barbara Baldwin, Information Services Director for the American Running and Fitness Association in Maryland.

"Raking leaves, stroveling snow, sanding, painting and waxing the car are calorie burners."

According to Laura Gladwin, California-based exercise physiologist, gardening is a great exercise because weeding, pruning and planting require bending and stretching. "You will burn 1,000 calories by doing three-and-a-half hours of garden or yard work in a week," she says.

Ellen F., a crafter in Coral Springs, Fl, found out that dieting wasn't enough to help her shed 20 pounds of excess weight.. She joined a low-impact aerobics class at her community center. By doing aerobics excercises for an hour, three times a week, she lost 20 pounds much quicker than simply dieting.

Walking is one of the healthiest, easiest and cheapest form of exercise. Stroll briskly through a park or around your neighborhood. Walking will be more pleasurable if you do it with a friend..

Suzanne Rossa, an exercise physiologist at Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in West Palm Beach Florida says, "Aerobics excercises improves your circulation , increases blood flow, allow you to have a better blood pressure and decreases the amount of fatty substances in your bloodstream."

(7) Build muscle.

Tufts University studies revealed that strength training - the kind that builds muscle will raise your metabolic rate, which enable you to burn calories. Strength training does not always follow that your muscles will grow bigger but they will certainly grow stronger.

Daniel Kosich in his book, A Personal Guide to Real Life Weight Management says, "when you make muscles stronger, they burn more calories. That means that for each pound of muscle you build with strength excercises, you burn 20 to 30 calories a day from your resting energy output or about 7,300 calories a year. You can strength train by using machines and free weights such as barbells.

(8) Follow the Pyramid.

The American Diatetic Association recommends a food guide pyramid that serves as a general list of healthful foods that must be eaten daily. The pyramid has four levels. The top of the pyramid is the smallest part , represents fats, oils and sweets. This group includes salad dressings, butter, ice cream, softdrinks, candies and desserts and foods that has very little nutritional value and can make your calories add up to.

At level two of the pyramid are the milk, yogurt, cheese group, meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts. These foods provide you with protein, calcium, iron and zinc.. ADA recommends two to three servings daily of this group.

The third level represents the vegetable and fruit groups, which are good sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. ADA recommends three to five servings daily of this group.

At the base of the pyramid are the bread, cereal, rice and pasta. ADA recommends 6 to 11 servings of this group. These foods are source of fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals

(9) Stop taking the following food.

ALCOHOL : a 12-ounce can or bottle of beer contains 150 calories. An

Alcoholic beverage can add 100 to 200 calories to your meal.

Alcohol is stored in the liver as fat.

COCONUT : An ounce of raw coconut contains 100 calories, around 77%

Of which is saturated fat.

CHOCOLATE, CANDY, COOKIES :

They are full of simple carbohydrates, which means they are

High in sugar and fats. The main fat in chocolate is cocoa

butter which is approximately 60% saturated fat.

WHOLE MILK : SWITCH TO SKIM MILK

Whole milk has high content of fat.

SUGAR : Softdrinks has very high sugar content.

MARGARINES : Contain hydrogenated vegetable oils.

			QUESTION:
Best diet tips/foods/exercises for me?
So for my New Year's Resolution, I've decided to lose some weight, about 40 pounds or so. I'm thirteen, 5'3", and I weigh around 164. I don't look quite as heavy as one would imagine, my body is closer to that a 17-18 year old, as I hit puberty around four years ago. I tend to gain weight in the hips-thigh area.

So I was wondering, what should I be eating? I don't want to be on some 'diet plan', but what are some low fat, low cal, snacks and meals? And I probably prefer the taste of actually healthy foods over the so called 'light' junk foods. I've been eating stuff like fruits, salads, soups, fish, sandwiches, etc. and taking in about 500-800 calories a day. How many I should I be consuming?

And exercise, what type would be good for me? I've been just trying to go on walks, or do some real 'exercising' for about thirty minutes a day to start with. I know it would probably be better to go do something outside, but I live in south Georgia, and the weather is horrible, even in January.

Oh, and I feel the need to mention, I'm home-schooled, so I can't really do any form of sport or anything at a school.
Oh, and also, I can't really go out and do anything like that because the only thing within an hour of where I live is a Wal-Mart. Perhaps I should run around Wal-Mart? Annnd, I know going to the gym would be great, but when in real life, I have kind of bad SAD(Social Anxiety Disorder), so that would be like way too many people, and social interactions for me.

				ANSWER:
Just because you're homeschooled, doesn't mean you are incapable of getting out and exercising. You could go to a bowling alley, skating rink, ice skating, a fitness center or gym... the options are all out there for you, just go out there and take action for yourself! If you eat about 2,000 calories a day, you should be on good a track.

			QUESTION:
RE: Best diet tips for a 13 years old girl in 3 months?
I'm just 13 years old but I look like 15 or 16 years old. ME, my parents,my teachers and friends wants me to lose weight because I'm really fat. I weight is 140 lbs and my height is just 5'2 . I have big hips and butt. I will be tired this April because I'll take Volleyball practice, wushu practice, badminton practice, table tennis practice, rondalla practice, and dance practice *I love doing it* . I'll be on Gym too with my bestfriends. I eat a lot. best food to eat?

				ANSWER:
hey, i'm 13 and trying to lose weight too!
i'm also 5'2!

what i suggest is keeping portion sizes small, and eating healthy snacks through out the day.
and keeping away from sugary treats and drinks.

instead of juice or coke, drink water.
and make sure you get protein (meats), and fruits and veggies, and carbs (bread, pasta, etc) because if you don't, you'll kill your metabolism.

for meat, make sure its always lean meat. stay away from pork, unless it's lean, because usually pork is pretty fattening. chicken is good if it's grilled instead of fried. and steak is really good for you.
for fruits and veggies, eat basically whatever you want, but put low-fat sauce or no sauce on them.
for carbs, you dont want to eat too many a day... so whole wheat bread, rice cakes, whole wheat pasta etc, are good.

for SNACKS. (mmmm, snacks)
fruits, veggies, rice cakes (good with salt and pepper), fat free yogurt, protein smoothies, corn chips and salsa (look for the healthy choice ones)...
are some of my favourites.

i hope this helps and good luck! (:

			QUESTION:
What is the best site for diet tips/ideas??
thanx!

				ANSWER:
Hey there! I just started suscribing to Prevention Magazine, and incidentally--I found LOTS of great diet tips on their online site....You should definitely this out:
http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778,s1-4-88-279-2208-1,00.html

Also, if you're trying to lose weight...I know this great formula I learned, to get to your target weight..see below:

3,500 calories = 1 pound
*Take the desired weight that you would LIKE to be..Then add a zero to that number...That final number is the amount of calories per day that you will need to intake and NOT exceed to get to your desired weight.

For example:
If you are 130lbs., and you want to weigh 115lbs., add a
zero-->1,150 calories a day you should consume.

I hope this helps you, take care!
