Diets That Work

I must confess that I have always been a fan of low carb diets that work. My personal training clients are constantly coming to me for advice on diets, and frequently I will suggest a low carb diet. Unfortunately, some of them don't heed ALL of my directions while on the diet. The result being that they experience frequent plateaus, and inconsistent weight loss. I generally discover that most of them are making this one big mistake!

During the course of just about any diet, there are periods of time when an individual is following the plan, and not losing any weight. These frustrating periods of time are commonly referred to as a plateau.

Most plateaus are caused by fluid retention, particularly if the intake of sodium (salt) IS NOT reduced while on the diet. Water is quite frequently retained right beneath the surface of the skin.

On most low carb diets that work, dieters tend to lose a great amount of water weight during the initial stages of the diet. Generally, during the first 2 weeks or so. The reason for this fluid loss is that carbohydrates act as a "dam" for body fluids. When carbohydrates are drastically reduced, the body "dumps" water that had been retained in body tissues.

However, after this initial loss of water weight, dieters notice that their weight loss dramatically decreases. In fact, their weight may increase a bit! This is caused by the body's need to take back the water that was lost during the initial stages of the diet.

The mistake that these dieters generally make is not drinking enough water when starting the low carb diet. This is also true of low carb diets that work. Dieters MUST drink at least 8, full glasses of water daily, to curtail fluid retention.

It is interesting that consuming more water PREVENTS water being held. This occurs because the kidneys are working "overtime", constantly releasing water.

  3. QUESTION:
Which diets work best after giving birth?
I want to lose the baby weight while I'm breastfeeding. I'm hoping that my body will use my stored fat to make milk. From experience, which diets work best for this? I want my milk to be good for the baby, so I can't go on any diets that cut out food groups completely.

Any books or websites with the diet plans on them would be helpful :) I'm trying to read up before I give birth!

    • ANSWER:
Forget the diet. Get an exercise ball. They are awesome for soothing the baby, you sit on it, hold the baby for gentle bouncing - double duty you get exercise in.

Also, this is just my scheme (id ask your doc on it) - you could also just supplementally pump - and freeze it. Then you'd have the milk for when your baby weaned, and lose that 40cal per ounce. I wouldnt attempt this though until you get in a good routine, maybe even the 5 month mark, right before solids come in at 6 months. Also you never know how the baby will sleep, you could be dead tired, just remember to put the baby and your health - and sanity first, the baby weight can come off later. It can sometimes be easier for some women, based on the temperment of their baby. You just never know.

  4. QUESTION:
Is it true that depending on your body type not all diets work for you?

      Period.
In almost 100% of cases, the people end up fatter than they were to begin with.
      They DO NOT work.

You'll lose about 200 to 500 grams a week until your body settles at the best weight for you.

  6. QUESTION:
Do low calorie diets work, have they ever worked for you?
    even if you eat rubbish?

eg snack a jacks are not healthy ,but are low cal.
would you still lose weight eating them?

are you actually better eating higher cal food that is healthier, when trying to lose weight?

    • ANSWER:
Actually Low Calorie Diets don't work.

You won't lose weight using a Low Calorie Dieting Plan . In fact, eating low calories is the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body's fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight (low calorie diets may allow a few pounds of weight loss for the first few days, but then after that all weight loss comes to a halt known as a dieting plateau). You can never get slim by starving yourself.

Do 3-day diets work, if so whats one for a 14 year old girl?
If so, can you give me one that a 14-year old girl should follow? I weigh like 200 pounds): But I want to be around 150 ASAP?
I didn't mean I wanted to lose 50 pounds in 3 days, I ment what are some 3-day diets in which I can keep repeating to help me lose the weight:)

    • ANSWER:
Fad diets, starvation diets, fasting, and diet pills do not work. Any diet that is temporary will only produce results that are temporary at best.

Losing fat any faster than about 4 lbs a week is impossible. Any additional weight you might lose would either be water weight, or your muscle atrophying.

The only way to lose fat is a complete lifestyle change where you stop doing what made you obese in the first place and adopt healthy eating and exercise habits for the rest of your life, such as:

      1. Eat about 6 small complete meals throughout the day (fish, almonds, walnuts, and lean proteins in general, plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, and complex multigrain carbohydrates) spaced out about every 2-3 hours. Consume between 1500-2500 calories a day.
      2. Do NOT starve yourself, do NOT binge eat.
      3. Be as active as you can; nothing to do for 10 minutes? Knock out 10 push-ups.
      4. Eat some spicy foods; take a decent amount of vitamin C, and drink between a half-gallon and a whole gallon of WATER a day. Avoid anything deep-fried, white bread, sprinkles, and any refined sugar.
      5. No more soda. Ever.
      6. If you do drink coffee, drink it black.
      7. Do at least 35 minutes of cardio straight at least once a day, at least three times a week, more if you are not trying to put on muscle.
      8. Do a large amount of full body exercises whenever possible (Jumping Jacks, Pull-ups, Chin ups, dips, squats, hanging leg raises, hanging knee raises, back raises, glute ham raises, burpees)
      9. Get at least 6 hours of sleep a night, but no more then 9.
      10. Here is the most important part: STICK TO IT!

  13. QUESTION:
Do High Protein- Moderate Carb - Low Fat Diets work as well as Low Carb Diets to Bun Fat?
It's just that I feel so uncomfortable on low carb high protein diets, they have brought results to me, but I feel like shit really. I also swim a lot, i know that exercise part helps build muscle and burn fat as well.

    • ANSWER:
The first week is rough, there is no denying that but most people feel better than ever after the first week. Carb cycling will stop the conversion process so the body won't be able to perform athletically while being fueled by fat.

Carbs trigger insulin. Insulin is the fat storage hormone & while it's dominating the bloodstream, fat cannot be released from fat cells.

      This study:

      http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/content/1/1/2

seems to suggest that after one has become fat adapted, endurance exercise performance returns to normal, but sprint performance remains poor. The suggested reason is that this type of exercise can not be fueled by fat, it must be fueled by glucose.

      from the article below -

Numerous current studies show that dieters who follow high-protein low-carb strategies--even plans with higher fat intake--lose more fat and maintain or gain more muscle mass than dieters who rely on higher carb diets.

Yes, you read that right--many dieters actually gained muscle mass without working out, simply by eating a high-protein diet. This is due to several factors. First, amino acids from protein drive muscle growth. When you consume a high-protein meal, amino acids from the protein travel to muscle cells and actually initiate the processes that cause muscle growth.

      http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KFY/is_4_23/ai_n13790123/?tag=content;col1

I highly recommend adding virgin coconut oil to your diet. All fats can be used for sustained energy, but coconut oil is the (only) fat that can be used for quick energy like a carb.

It takes awhile to convert the body from being fueled by glucose to being fueled by fat but it does convert. It can take several weeks for the body to be able to compete athletically while using fat for fuel. The body does not become fat adapted though it "carb cycling" techniques are employed. Low carb marathon runners don't "hit the wall" with mid race fuel changeovers. It's not being fueled by fat that slows them down, it's the immediate fuel conversion period.

If you eat protein without sufficient fuel calories from fats or carbs, then you convert dietary protein to fuel leaving no protein for cellular needs, forcing the body to catabolize it's own lean tissues. Carbs may be optional, but fuel calories are not but they can come from fat or carbs, but not protein. There are not enough calories in fruits & vegs to fuel the body.

If you don't keep your calories high enough, the body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition. Although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier to accumulate fat in the future (since all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories will be gone).

Protein is a very inefficient fuel to use exclusively for long term & the byproducts of the conversion to fuel can be dangerous if they overwhelm the body faster than the body can clear out the nitrogen & ammonia..

Just for example - Someone asked "what if" about a diet of 500g of pure protein (2000 calories a day)

500g protein with no fat would be fatal. Fat is essential but protein without fat will cause diarrhea & then death. So this next bit is only hypothetically speaking.

500g of protein only would turn the protein into a fuel source and not be able to be used for tissue repairs & cellular regeneration. So although you would think 500g of protein would be sufficient for these needs, it would be converted to a very inefficient fuel source with a dangerous buildup of nitrogen & ammonia (byproducts of gluconeogenesis). The body can handle some of these byproducts but not large quantities for long term. So in essence, all this protein would be processed as fuel and the body would STILL have to catabolize it's own lean tissues for a protein source. 100% of the protein would be needed to convert to 58% glucose - it would be equal to fueling the body with 1160 calories of carbs and NO protein (IF your only ingestion was 2000 calories (500g) in pure protein).

It's confusing to eat SO much protein and have none bioavailable but your body requires FUEL calories (which can come from fat OR carbs or both) AND protein.

BUT if you ate more than sufficient protein with more than sufficient dietary fat calories AND controlled carbs to less than 9grams per hour (Maximum carbs would be 144grams day or 576 calories) the balance of fuel calories would HAVE to be from dietary fats - at 9 calories per gram.

As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones & allow sex hormones (testosterone in males) & human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean tissue will be gained even without exercise.

  14. QUESTION:
which diets work and are they okay for teens?
And I don't do exercise. I can eat healthy but that don't do nothing

    • ANSWER:
Trust me, diets do not work. I can say that because I tried diets and they never work. Exercise and a healthy diet is the only way. You need to burn more than you take in. I recommend doing a sport with friends instead of always going to the gym.

  15. QUESTION:

  16. QUESTION:
What diets work really fast? ?
I want to know if anyone knows a diet that works really fast like over the course of a month or so. I have to lose 30 pounds and want to make it quick. I am working out as well, but understand it is mostly about the food. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

how well do low carb diets work?
i need to lose weight fast and i heard that low carbs does the trick. How many carbs do i need in one day. I need to lose 25 lbs. and in like two months.

    • ANSWER:
I recommend doing the Atkins diet. I lost 15 pounds in the 1st 2 weeks and 40 all together during my induction phase in just 2 months. You can go to http://www.atkins.com and get all the information you need to know on there, along with a foods list. You can also get yummy low carb snacks from http://www.imedmart.com

  18. QUESTION:
What is the one thing that all diets that work have in common?
No matter how you slice it - the one thing that all diets have that work - everything from Atkins to South Beach -- is calorie reduction. All these "diets" are just tricks to get you to eat less. Sure, the Atkins has a metabolic effect by lowering carb intake, but everyone I know who has tried Atkins has ALSO reduced their calories (even if they didn't do it consciously). They find themselves ordering the steak dinner at a restaurant and discarding the baked potato. Well, that jumbo backed potato has several hundred calories. If you eat your steak, green vegetable, and a soup, but skipped the potato - what have you done? Reduced calories!

With all these juice diets and soup diets -- weight watchers -- and all the rest -- add them up! People doing these things are eating less!

People! Eat less and eat right! That's the way to do it. Don't do Atkins or juice diets. Don't starve yourself. Take in 500 calories a day less than you burn, and you WILL lose weight.

    • ANSWER:
to put it more exactly, less calories go in than go out. You could eat 3000 calories a day, as long as you were burning 3500 calories and you'd lose weight.

If you are a completely inactive slug, you may need to consider eating next to nothing. On the other hand, if you engage in vigorous aerobic exercise every day, you can continue to eat what you used to eat in your former lazy slug life and you will probably lose plenty of weight.

To put it another way: "get off your @ss and deal with it!"

I recently lost 20 pounds, and now I feel like I'm starting to gain it back, but I have ZERO time to exercise. Does anyone know any diets that will work fast and help me loose another twenty pounds in around two months??

    • ANSWER:
      Hi!

Reading about the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet makes you wonder if they might not be on to something. The way the diet works is different than other fad diets that involve cutting out certain types of food like low carbohydrates, low fat or low calorie. Instead it uses calorie shifting foods that you would normally eat, increases the number of times you eat, and changes when you eat certain things for fast fat loss.

      What is Calorie Shifting?

The way calorie shifting works involves tricking the fat hormones that are sent out by the brain. Every time you eat something, your brain sends out fat storing and fat burning hormones, depending on what the item is.

The idea is to send more fat burning than fat storing hormones, so that the body does not hold onto the fat for later use. If you keep confusing the metabolism, you will see fast fat loss, as much as 9 pounds in 11 days, that is the first weightloss principle of Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet.

How Does The Metabolism Control Weightloss?

This scientific weight control fact about the metabolism and how it works stems from our ancestry as cavemen, when there were famine periods between hunts. The body would store and hold onto fat for survival. The metabolism has not evolved from this self-defense tactic and doesn't realize we can just run to the grocery store and get whatever we want.

On restrictive diets, weightloss can plateau when the metabolism thinks it is experiencing a famine period, and it will only burn what is taken in. Even on some of the popular low carbohydrate diets, it is advised to eat pizza for two days when your weight plateaus to get the metabolism going.

Why Do Some Weightloss Diets Leave You With No Energy?

The only problem with many of these restrictive weightloss diets is the metabolism goes back to only burning what you take in and many people complain about being tired and worn down, when it is mainly the metabolism storing up the energy for later.

By eating healthy, nutritious foods that are fat burning, the metabolism burns as much energy as you need. Many people on restrictive weightloss diets will regain the weight when they go back to eating normal foods.

What Is The Best Diet For Weightloss?

The best weight control diet allows you to eat the foods that you would normally eat, have in your refrigerator and cabinets. By timing when you eat certain foods, how many times a day you eat them, and balancing the types of food, your metabolism will burn what you take in and then some, because it knows you will be feeding it again shortly, instead of starving.

Prepackaged fat loss products and frozen dinners are not something you can live on the rest of your live. You need to understand the basics of natural weight control, and Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet uses the fundamental principles of controlling the metabolism with calorie shifting normal foods you eat every day.

Check my source, it might help. It's a diet that works. Good luck!

I have tried a few diets and i haven't gotten any results. And i want to lose weight in my legs and stomach. Anyone know any good diets and work outs that would help me lose a few pounds?

    • ANSWER:
Diets don't help because your body goes into "starvation mode". and conserves all the fat you got. So, you got to eat smarter - cut out the deep fried foods, eat veges without the salad dressing; drink water(and a lot of it) Avoid junk foods like the plague. Eat the foods Mom used to make.
Then you have the energy to do any kind of workout before you. Aerobic exercises such as Karate, Judo,(they are 90% workouts) and skip rope and swimming.

  26. QUESTION:
How do low carb high protein diets actually work?
I don't want to hear about how they are bad :) I would just like to know how they actually work. A friend of mine went on a modified Atkins diet and lost so much weight plus she kept it all off and said it was very easy and there was no calorie counting or anything. Is that true?

How do they make your body lose weight?

    • ANSWER:
Low carbohydrate diets is to force the body to use fat as its main energy source, when this happens a person produces 'ketone bodies' to fuel parts of the body that can not use fat as an energy source - the brain, and red blood cells, in particular. When this happens a person is said to be in a state of ketosis - characterised by smelly breath (an acetone smell like nail varnish) and side effects such as nausea and fatigue.
In the short term, most people who go on low carb diets do lose weight and they lose it very quickly. However, the majority of weight loss comes from loss of water and muscle tissue, not fat which is what you need to lose to keep the weight off.

  27. QUESTION:
Are there really any easy diets that work?
I've tried Atkins and Nutrisystem but they just don't work for me. I need something that is easy to follow and doesn't require a lot of recipe planning or special foods.

    Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I used Nutrisystem too but I realized it was really all about portion control. For a couple of months now I've been following a "calorie shifting" plan that mixes up the types of food that are allowed.
I'm seeing some good results, and it has an online meal plan generator - takes the work out of what to prepare for.

Check it out, maybe it will work for you too.

  28. QUESTION:

  30. QUESTION:
Do you think that the gluten & casein free diets really work?
Just looking for stories about whether it worked or didn't work to help with autism or PDD. Did anyone try it with a picky eater?

    • ANSWER:
Gluten free diets are necessary for Celiac disease where you lack the enzyme needed to help digest gluten, and as a result can get inflammation of the lining of the small intestine.

There is no good evidence that restricting gluten or casein has any role whatsoever in the treatment of autism or PDD. The cause of autism and PDD is unknown (it is NOT related to MMR vaccine or thimerosol preservative...that is definitive, ignore Jenny McCarthy). It may well turn out that nutrition plays a role in management, but the evidence is lacking.

EDIT Cindy M. Where did I claim to "know everything" and how was I mocking in my answer? I was simply stating a fact, the scientific evidence is lacking for the diets mentioned. Anecdotes are always interesting and inspiring, but they are not evidence of anything. The plural of anecdote is not data. It makes no difference at all whether I have an autistic child or not, because my personal experience would also be meaningless.

The reason we study these sorts of things with randomized double blind placebo controlled trials is that it controls for error and bias. Your friends child could have got better for reasons other than diet. Maybe people were paying more attention to her, maybe they were seeing things that were more subjective and driven by emotion, maybe maybe maybe. We don't actually KNOW without looking at this in an objective way. We also don't know if it may harm children.
It is simply an unproven speculation, not a fact.

Don't take my word for it...here is one (of many) reviews on dietary supplements done by the world famous, highly respected Cochrane Collaberation. They are an unbiased group of scientists who look at ALL the literature available, analyze it and put together all the data. This is THE gold standard for evidence based medicine.

  31. QUESTION:
Do treatments for autism like gluten-free diets really work?
At least that's what a lot of parents of autistic s claim any how. How effective are they really,or is it really just more 'snake oil', or maybe various treatments work better for some than for others, I don't know!

      They don't work.

      Free Weight Loss programs

The race to fitness is on and a lot of people are getting into the band wagon. Some people do it to achieve a sexy body, some people just do it because they are embarrassed with the body they have now, while others do it simply to remain fit and healthy. As such, many fitness programs are out in the internet, in gyms, spas and fitness centers all over. Some are too expensive to afford that one may even lose weight just by trying to work out the money needed to pursue these fitness programs.

One may not have to go to the gym or the spa or any fitness center and spend much just to slim down to obtain that longed for sexy body. There are many books available in the bookstore which offer weight loss programs which are convenient and for free, of course the books are not though. These weight loss programs, or diet plans are gaining immense popularity with so much publicity, testimonials and reviews that one may be confused which exactly to follow. So before choosing which weight loss plan to follow, try reading these summaries about the most popular diet programs out today.

Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins. This weight loss program encourages high protein diet and a trim down on the carbs. One can feast on vegetables and meat but should fast on bread and pasta. One is also not restricted against fat intake so it is okay to pour in the salad dressing and freely spread on the butter. However, after the diet, one may find himself lacking on fiber and calcium yet high in fat. Intake of grains and fruits are also limited.

Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by Drs. Heller. This diet plan advocates low carbohyrate eating. Approves on eating meats, vegetables and fruits, dairy and grain products. however, warns against taking in too much carb. "Reward" meal can be too high on fats and saturated fats.

Choose to Lose by Dr. Goor. Restrains fat intake. One is given a "fat" budget and he is given the liberty on how to spend it. It does not pressure the individual to watch his carbohydrate intake. Eating meat and poultry as well as low-fat dairy and seafoods is okay. A go signal is also given on eating vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and pasta. This weight loss plan is fairly healthy, good amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as saturated fats. Watch triglyceride levels though; if high, trim down the carbohydrates and tuck in more of the unsaturated fats.

The DASH Diet. Advocates moderate amounts of fat and protein intake and high on carbs. Primarily designed to lower blood pressure, the diet plan follows the pyramid food guide and encourages high intake of whole wheat grains as well as fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy. Some dieters think it advocates too much eating to procure significant weight loss.

Eat More, Weigh Less by Dr. Ornish. Primarily vegetarian fare and strictly low-fat. Gives the go signal on the "glow" foods but warns to watch it on non-fat dairy and egg whites. This diet is poor in calcium and retricts consumption of healthy foods like seafoods and lean poultry.

Eat Right for Your Type. Interesting because it is based on the person's blood type. recommends plenty of mest for people with the blood type O. Diet plans for some blood types are nutritionally imbalanced and too low in calories. And for the record, there is even no proof that blood type affects dietary needs.

The Pritkin Principle. Focused on trimming the calorie density in eating by suggesting watery foods that make one feel full. Eating vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, pasta, soups, salads and low-fat dairy is okay. Although limits protein sources to lean meat, pseafood and poultry. Although it is healthy by providing low amounts of saturated fats and rich amounts of vegetables and fruits, it is also low on calcium and limits lean protein sources.

Volumetrics. For low-density calorie eating. Recommends the same foodstuff as Pritkin but restricts fatty or dry foods like popcorn, pretzels and crackers. This plan is reasonably healthy given the high amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as being low in calorie density and saturated fats.

The Zone. Moderately low on the carbs yet moderately high on the proteins. Encourages low-fat protein foods like fish and chicken plus veggies, fruits and grains. It is also healthy but lacking in grains and calcium.

Weight Watchers. High carbohydrates, moderate on fats and proteins. A very healthy diet plan and very flexible too. it allows the dieter to plan his own meal rather than give him a set to follow.

Hope this helps! If you need any more tips just contact me

  34. QUESTION:
What are really good diets that work fast?
I'm 5feet and weigh an embarrassing 150. I know that's really overweight for my height but the thing is, is that I don't look the weight. i fit in a size 6 jean and size 8 dress...but i still wanna go to my healthy weight. any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Well i guess start with what is your normal routine? what do you eat normally? What are your hobbies? do you go to school? Are you muscular(muscle weighs more than fat)?
Then from there try making small changes in your lifestyle... food you eat,
1 Try not to eat sugar, you can instead use stevia or agave syrup to sweeten things NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP(HFCS).
2 Try eating more vegetables then complex carbs like bread and pastas
and when eating breads and pasta get whole grain look to make sure there is no HFCS in the bread or bleach white flour.
3 Try to lower your fat calories. try making fat calories 20-25% of your daily calories
4 how many calories do you normally consume a day?
3500calories= 1lb of fat so subtract 500 calories a day and you'll lose a pound a week and still have enough calories to function in your everyday life
take that number lets say its 1700 and subtract 500 so you'd be eating 1200 calories in a day
Try this website to help you figure out what calories you will need
      http://www.cudahychamber.com/Calc_Diet.htm

And of course for exercise you want to try to get some cardio in from 3-6 days a week for 45-60 mins. So if you are not used to doing this just start out adding a walk into your day or if you want to try a jog that could develop into running eventually

  39. QUESTION:
I need to lose 25 lbs fast. Does the South Beach & Protien diets work?
I want to lose 25 lbs in about 4-5 weeks. I know it's fast and not healthy blah, blah, blah but I just can't take it any more. My clothes don't fit. I have nothing to wear. I gained it when I got pregnant and I had some complications that caused me to gain. I just want it gone and fast. It is affecting my self esteem and how I feel about myself which is affecting my marriage. Once I get it off it will stay off. I am very healthy and I eat very healthy. My colesteral is only 126 and I exercise. I just need a quick fix to get it off once and for all. Help.

    • ANSWER:
25lbs in 4-5 weeks is not really that feasible - i know - i had to lose 70lbs after the birth of my kiddo - however..you could lose about 15 I say - because I did and here is how...

South Beach Diet works very well - its a no brainer and it IS healthy so that part is taken care of. Some people complain about Phase 1 part of the diet, truthfully - I skipped it and went straight to Phase 2 and did very well.

Then second part to losing all this weight is exercise. And believe me - I hate it..but..you HAVE to do it - you have to do something that really gets your heart rate up and for me it was Billy Blanks TaeBo. It is kick-butt and even if you are a beginner - you can just do what you can , march in place and then catch back up when you can again. I did his Basic workout series, not with the bands that he has. Although any of them will work. But you HAVE to exercise - and I did 4 days a week for about 40 minutes.

THAT is a sure fire way to lose weight quickly and healthy - South Beach and 4 days of 40 minutes of cardio. Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise or diet plan though.

And last thought - 1lb of fat = 3500 calories. To lose 1 lb a week - you have to omit 3500 calories from your diet. It sounds like a lot - it is - but not over 7 days - over 7 days you have to omit 500 calories a day from your diet. And you do that two ways - 1. from dieting and 2. from exercising. If you can omit 500 calories in food per day and then burn another 500 calories- thats 2 lbs a week. you'll also lose some water weight - so 2-3 lbs a week is pretty feasible.

Aim for 15 lbs in 6 weeks and you'll be doing great! And I'm with ya there - I have 10lbs I want to lose and am on the fast track to getting it off. its HARD though but we can do it!

Good luck - be healthy and try to have fun with exercise so if Tae bo isn't for you - find something else - simply walking (walking fast though) is going to do it for you too. Try taking a class of kickboxing or aerobics - I did kickboxing class 2 times a week and it REALLY helped. (and then I lost the weight last year and haven't exercised since and am paying for it now! hahaha)

  40. QUESTION:
What is an easy and effective way to lose a few pounds? Are there any several-day diets that work?
I just want to lose 10 pounds or so but between caring for my daughter and working, I have little time to prepare seaprate meals for myself and even less time to hit the gym. What can I do?

    • ANSWER:
Watch what you're eating portion wise. No soda. Go for a walk with your kids(family). Make exercising fun to do not a chore or it won't get done. Just from my own experience.

  41. QUESTION:
    Do low-carb diets work?
I planning to do a low carb diet. I'm mainly going to focus on veggies and lean meats/protein. I'll eat like grilled chicken (no skin), fish, almonds, deviled eggs, etc.

Does it really work? I'm also including 1hr of exercise a day, if that maybe more

I swim for 30-35min doing nothing but laps
and i hula dance for 30-40min (great workout)

and i drink lots of water. would this work?

    • ANSWER:
It won't work well the way you've got it planned. Lean meats will require lots of extra mayo and oils, grilled chicken is fine but the skin is fine (unless you just don't like it) but that sounds more like a low fat plan. To work properly to access & burn body fat, a low carb diet needs to be high calorie to keep the metabolism in fat burning mode and high fat to be in ketosis.

Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) and exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of the Atkins program is converting your body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). You need to keep your fat levels at >65% of your calories, if you don't your body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

You can have several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce and celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers the first 2 weeks and more variety of vegetables thereafter add 5 grams per day additional (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) Keep your carbs at less than 9grams per hour to control insulin.

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert your body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycosis) you will probably feel sluggish the first week but most people feel better than ever thereafter.

Ground flax seed (2-3 Tbsp) 1/4 cup of water, cinnamon, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle and nuke for 1.5 min. for hot cereal or 2 min. for more of a muffin type thing. Great low carb, high fiber treat.
      --------------------------------------…
I recommend the new plan but you have to follow it specifically read the book or the website (www.atkins.com). This is closer to the original (1972) plan, but its very simplistic:

You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

Your body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow your metabolism to compensate and store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering your calories, it will continue lowering that set point, til you can survive off nothing and store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of food.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) triggers insulin which can store the calories you eat into fat. The more protein you eat the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate you eat the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

Simple carbs are addictive and can be disastrous to our health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs and eat one every time you want "something" have huge omelets for breakfast, with bacon, a lil onion, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops for lunch. Get pork rinds and eat them with tuna salad. Steak for dinner. Make a huge sugar free cheese cake for dessert. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the fourth day, your addiction will be gone and you can start making healthy choices.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger and unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Once you get near your goal, you start adding 5 carbs every week til you gain weight, then you subtract 10 carbs. That would give you your personal carb level (everyone is different and it depends on how active you are.) As long as you remain <9 carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control, and shouldn't gain weight.

Many people gain weight on high carb, then switch to low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb that they gain weight. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar and maintain weight or health.

Dr.Atkins was a cardiologist, low carb was a health plan easier sold as a "diet" Read any of his books for easily understandable science. Lutz "Life without Bread" & Taubes "Good calories, Bad calories" are excellent books that dispel all the nutrition myths.

Reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass will have you in awesome shape in no time. Good luck!

  42. QUESTION:
    Do low fat diets work?
I heard somewhere that I you only consume a certain amount of fat grams a day you will loose weight. Will this work? And how many do you think would be a good amount a day?

    • ANSWER:
low fat diets are one of the biggest piles of crap ever in the nutrition industry

first of all not alll fats are bad, some are good for you and ur body needs them to function properly, So by going on a low fat diet, u r depriving urself of these healthy fats. Which will actually hinder ur fat loss.

and second, the fat u eat doesnt make you gain fat, sure the bad fats are bad for ur heart and cardio system. But they have no direct effect on fat gain.

Eating less cals in a day than you burn is the KEY to losing fat

  43. QUESTION:
How do "low-carb" diets really work?
I'm asking this question for an assignment that I have for college level biology. Also, try to answer, Why would a high protein diet lead to weight loss, and is the weight loss sustainable? And, what might be the negative side effects of the diet?

    • ANSWER:
ur body turns carbs into glucose, which it uses for energy. if ur not taking in enough carbs (glucose), u will start to burn ur fat as energy

any unused carbs that u dont burn off as energy, are just stored as fat

As far as i know a really high protein diet is only good for building muscle, and the more muscle u have the more fat u will burn, bu ton its own, no i dont think so

  44. QUESTION:
    1200 calorie diets work?
i need to lose weight. and i went to a site and typed in my height,age,ect.. and it said i would lose 4 pounds a week on a 1200 calorie diet. while working out 6 days a week for an hour.

    could this be true?
and, do 1200 calorie diets really work? i feel like its soo many calories that ill lose like, 2 pounds a month...

    • ANSWER:
Here you go: This is from my own experience and what has worked for me. I have laid it all out for you so that others may have the success I have.

The perfect way to loose weight and monitor your progress is to use a calorie counter on a daily basis while you diet.

      Energy In/Energy Out

      Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

      One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

      1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

      Water Intake/Less Storage

Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 to 80 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

      Good Food

      My favorite things to eat:

      Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that "got to have" item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet "snack" that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

      Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

It’s all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...that’s okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

      Fruits and Veggies

All you want on the schedule listed below.
Bananas are my favorite. They are very filling and can make a meal all on their own.

      ____

      Vitamins

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Just One vitamin a day will give you as much energy as approx. 1 1/2 cans of red bull...WITHOUT the calorie intake.
WoW..now your making progress already because you have made more room in your intake calories for actual healthy food.

      _____

      Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.
So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what??? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

      ____

      Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

      ____

      Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

  45. QUESTION:
    how do liquid diets work?
    just wondering......not considering doing it.
i just don't get it because aren't you consuming the exact same amount of calories anyway, just in a different form - like liquid instead of solid? how would that make a difference at all?

    • ANSWER:
You're thinking of a liquid cleanse/fast. Not meant for losing weight, but detoxing your digestive system, letting it rest and getting rid of harmful toxins, that's why the calories stay level with your daily needs. A liquid diet is one where you restrict your calories to basically nothing.

  46. QUESTION:
do really high protein diets actually work?
I have heard about people that eat eggs and bacon and lots of meat and they lose serious weight. I want to see what other people think...

    • ANSWER:
There is no such thing as never and always. High-protein diets do work if done properly. Atkins is an extreme and I would not recommend it, however....

The basic concept is that we typically eat more carbs than we need for our daily energy expenditure. Any carbs that are not used for metabolic or physical exertion will be stored as bodyfat by your body. To lose fat, you must convince your body to use fat as an energy source instead of carbs.

The way to do this is to slowly lower your carb intake (maybe 10-15% per week). As you do this, naturally your caloric intake will drop. The problem here is that your body will either use fat or protein as its new energy source, since it has fewer carbs available. If you increase your protein to compensate for your carb reduction, your body will be less likely to enter a catabolic state (muscle-destroying) and more likely to burn fat in order to supply your daily energy needs.

So, higher protein, lower carb, and moderate healthy fats (almonds, flaxseed, olive oil) is the way to go. I would recommend against any drastic changes. Start where you are now and adjust 10-15% each week. I would also recommend against saturated fats such as bacon and red meat.

      Hope this helps!

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:
